Iran says it's easy to close Strait of Hormuz (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's navy chief says his country can easily close the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the passageway through which a sixth of the world's oil flows.

Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told state-run Press TV Wednesday that the navy is in control of the vital waterway and can readily block it. It was the second such warning from a senior official in two days.

Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi threatened Tuesday that Iran will close the strait, cutting off oil exports, if the West imposes sanctions on Iranian oil shipments to punish Tehran for its nuclear program, which the west suspects is aimed at making weapons.

Dan Aykroyd joins 'Dog Fight' with Will Ferrell (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Dan Aykroyd has joined Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis in the political comedy "Dog Fight," TheWrap has confirmed.

"Dog Fight," due August 10, stars Ferrell and Galifianakis as bumbling, rival politicians battling for a congressional seat in North Carolina. All three are producing the movie, along with frequent Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay.

It is not yet clear what role Aykroyd will play in the Jay Roach-directed film, however.

Ferrell and Galifianakis have some history with politics. Ferrell famously spoofed President George W. Bush on "Saturday Night Live" and in his HBO special, "You're Welcome, America -- A Final Night with George W. Bush." Galifianakis' real-life uncle Nick Galifianakis served in Congress from 1967 to 1973.

For his part, Aykroyd played President Jimmy Carter in a presidential reunion sketch featured on FunnyorDie.com, which was co-founded by Ferrell and McKay.

"Dog Fight," distributed by Warner Bros., also stars John Lithgow, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Thomas Middleditch and Brian Cox.

The film was written by "Eastbound & Down" scribe Shawn Harwell and one of the HBO show's executive producers, Chris Henchy.

Romney's ride stays remarkably smooth in GOP race (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Regardless of whether Mitt Romney wins the Iowa Republican caucus Tuesday, he has enjoyed a remarkably easy presidential race so far.

When his rivals have stopped battering each other long enough to criticize him, they've often done so tentatively and ham-handedly. Romney's injury-free journey is all the more surprising because, despite some obvious campaign skills, he has well-known vulnerabilities ripe for attack.

The turn of events has astonished campaign pros in both parties, who expected Romney to be more bloodied. And it has dismayed President Barack Obama's allies, who assumed Republicans would at least soften up the man they viewed as the likeliest nominee from the start.

"By all rights, Romney should have spent the last six months with a target painted on his back," said Dan Schnur, a former GOP adviser who teaches politics at the University of Southern California. "But he has been able to keep his head low," Schnur said, while a series of rivals have taken turns quarreling, surging and falling.

New polls show Romney heading into Tuesday's caucus as the front-runner in a state that seems ill-suited to his background, and which snubbed him four years ago. The Iowa Republican caucus is usually dominated by evangelical voters, home-schoolers and other social conservatives. Yet his rivals have done little here to turn those dynamics against Romney, a Mormon who supported legalized abortion and mandatory health insurance as governor of liberal Massachusetts.

Romney began this year's campaign de-emphasizing Iowa. But his rivals' inability to produce a clear leader has opened a possible path for him to seize the prize.

A Romney win in Iowa, which is far from certain, would make him the clear favorite to win the nomination. Next up is the Jan. 10 primary in New Hampshire. Romney has a second home there, and the GOP voters' greater emphasis on financial matters is better suited to his politics.

Romney's luck stems largely from his opponents' early conclusion that he had enough money and experience to go deep into the nominating contest, and only one viable alternative could emerge. They've been competing for that spot, and attacking each other, ever since.

"If you have modest resources, you're going to spend your time differentiating yourself from the rest of the non-Romney crowd," said GOP lobbyist and strategist Mike McKenna.

Campaign attack ads in Iowa underscore the point. When former House Speaker Newt Gingrich surged in polls earlier this month, he was quickly pilloried by TV ads and mailings financed by groups associated with Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas.

In two weeks in Iowa, a PAC that supports Romney dumped $2.6 million into the effort, according to records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics. Having little money to respond, Gingrich has plummeted in the polls.

A far smaller sum was spent on anti-Romney ads, mostly by a pro-Obama group trying to fill the vacuum.

Campaign veterans say Perry had the best chance to establish himself early as the Romney alternative. That could have positioned him to hammer away at his Massachusetts rival. A proven fundraiser with 10 years as Texas governor, Perry rocketed to the top of GOP polls when he announced his candidacy in mid-August.

But he quickly fell after debate performances that typified the GOP field's inability, or unwillingness, to train sustained fire on Romney's obvious soft spots: his changed positions on abortion, gun control and gay rights, and his policy of requiring Massachusetts residents to buy health insurance or pay a penalty.

In a Sept. 22 debate in Florida, Perry started to describe Romney's various flip-flops. But he stammered and wandered so badly that it was nearly impossible to understand his point.

After that, the GOP field showed little interest in launching focused attacks on Romney's policy changes.

Romney was equally lucky in June. Then-candidate Tim Pawlenty had said in a TV interview that "Romneycare" was the inspiration for "Obamacare," the GOP term for the Democrats' 2010 health care overhaul. But in a televised debate that followed, Pawlenty refused to repeat the criticism. His reticence contributed to his fast decline, and gave Romney a big break.

Conservative columnist George Will said on ABC in September: "Tim Pawlenty got in trouble when he got a chance to attack Romney and didn't. Perry's in trouble because he attacked Romney and did it so incompetently."

Romney has enjoyed other breaks. James Pethokoukis of the conservative American Enterprise Institute noted that Romney recently stopped short of endorsing a value-added tax without ruling it out in all circumstances.

"Many conservatives/libertarians simply hate, hate, hate the idea of a VAT," Pethokoukis wrote. "I would be surprised if those quotes don't end up in a 30-second, anti-Romney ad in Iowa or New Hampshire."

So far, they haven't.

Democrats contrast Romney's easy ride with Obama's grueling Iowa campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards, two well-financed politicians with sharp debating skills.

Rodell Mollineau heads American Bridge, a Democratic group that gathers information to use against Republicans in campaigns. This year's GOP candidates have tried to attack Romney at times, Mollineau said, "but they're just not very good at it."

"Perry has the money, but he can't get a sentence out," Mollineau said. Gingrich is articulate, he said, but hasn't raised enough money to wound Romney with broadcast ads.

Romney's luck continued Wednesday. Rep. Michele Bachmann criticized two rivals during her fast-moving bus tour of Iowa. She said Perry has spent "27 years as a political insider," and Paul would be "dangerous as president" because of his hands-off views on national security.

Romney largely escaped her ire.

UN, Iraq agree on Camp Ashraf resettlement plan

(AP) ? The United Nations and the Iraqi government have signed an agreement to relocate several thousand Iranian exiles living in a camp in northeastern Iraq, the U.N.'s office in Baghdad announced Sunday.

But it's not clear yet whether the camp's residents have signed off on the deal.

In a statement late Sunday, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq said the agreement establishes a process to move the residents of Camp Ashraf to a temporary location. It did not give a timeline for the move or specify the new location.

A statement from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the residents would be moved to Camp Liberty, a former U.S. military base near the Baghdad International Airport.

"At this new location, the UN High Commission for Refugees will be able to conduct refugee status determinations for the residents of Ashraf ? a necessary first step toward resettlement to third countries," the statement said.

The People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran first moved to Camp Ashraf during the regime of Saddam Hussein, who saw the group as a convenient ally against Tehran. The group is committed to the overthrow of the Iranian regime, and sided with Iraq in the war against Iran in the 1980s.

The group carried out a series of bombings and assassinations against Iran's clerical regime in the 1980s and fought alongside Saddam's forces in the Iran-Iraq war. But the group says it renounced violence in 2001. U.S. soldiers disarmed them during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been determined to close down the camp, located in barren terrain northeast of Baghdad about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the Iranian border, by the end of December. His government considers the camp as an affront to Iraq's sovereignty.

Last week, an Iraqi government spokesman said the government was working out a solution to the situation at Camp Ashraf with the U.N. and would allow the camp to stay open into January as residents are being relocated. At the time, representatives of the residents suggested they would be willing to move, as long as their security was provided for.

Under the agreement outlined by the U.N., the international organization will monitor the relocation process and then a team from the U.N.'s refugee agency will be deployed at the new location to process the refugee claims.

The Iraqi government will be responsible for the exiles' safety during that time, and will have a liaison officer from the Ministry of Human Rights involved in the relocation, the U.N. said.

"I would like to highlight that the government is exclusively responsible for the safety and security of the residents both during their transfer and in the new location until they leave the country," said Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq.

The Iraqi government's vow to close Camp Ashraf had raised concerns that forcibly removing its 3,400 residents would result in violence. The U.N. has said that at least 34 people were killed in a raid on the camp by Iraqi security forces last April.

Representatives of the camp could not be reached Sunday evening. They sent out a press release Sunday evening saying that rockets had been fired on their camp. No casualties were reported. There was no way to immediately verify the claims.

The People's Mujahedeen has been branded a foreign terrorist organization by the United States, a designation now under review by the State Department. It has been removed from similar blacklists in Europe.

Chelsea Vs. Fulham, 2011 Premier League: West London Derby Kicks Off Boxing Day Football

Chelsea and Fulham contest a West London Derby on Boxing Day, with the Blues the heavy favorites at Stamford Bridge.

Dec 26, 2011 - Andre Villas-Boas has a minor injury crisis on his hands, but Chelsea will still feel like favorites going into their West London Derby against Fulham on Boxing Day. Branislav Ivanovic and John Obi Mikel picked up injuries against Tottenham Hotspur that will keep them out on Monday, while Alex has been removed from the team and Michael Essien is still on the long-term injury list. David Luiz's fitness will be decided on Monday morning.

Against Tottenham, Chelsea played with Jose Bosingwa in the center of defense with Paulo Ferreira at right back. More like than that is a move from defensive midfield to central defense for Oriol Romeu, who spent some of his time at the position while playing for Barcelona B. This would likely mean a return to the starting XI for Frank Lampard, while Raul Meireles would play a deeper role.

Fulham were absolutely crushed by Manchester United in their last league match, and they were particularly exploited down the flanks. Moussa Dembele and Bryan Ruiz don't exactly do much defending when they're played as wingers, and Martin Jol will probably have to make a change to avoid being run over by Chelsea.

Afghan president to replace top human rights officials (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? Afghan President Hamid Karzai will replace four people at the national human rights commission to bring fresh blood into the group, and not because he is seeking to remove some of his most outspoken critics, his spokesman said on Friday.

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) is appointed by the state but acts independently. Any move by the government to oust its workers could raise questions about the state's commitment to protecting human rights.

Aimal Faizi, chief spokesman at the president's office, said Ahmad Nader Nadery, Ahmad Fahim Hakim, and Moulawee Ghulam Mohamad Ghareb will leave the commission after serving two 5-year terms.

A fourth commissioner, Hamida Barmaki, was killed in a suicide attack on a supermarket in Kabul in early 2011 and would need to be replaced as well, he added.

Faizi denied reports that the three men will be replaced because of a report by the rights commission detailing war atrocities over the past three decades, which is expected to be released in early 2012.

"The president is authorized by law to extend or not extend their mission if he wants to. We just want fresh people, new people," Faizi told Reuters.

"The fact that they were working on a report on war atrocities has nothing to do with it because we cannot stop the publication of such a report."

He said the president would announce the new commissioners in coming days.

Nadery and his colleagues have been frank in the past speaking out on issues plaguing war-torn Afghanistan, from women's rights, land grabs, child labor, civilian deaths by Taliban and NATO forces, to the fraud-marred presidential election in 2009.

Nadery said the government was violating procedures which require a consultative process before appointments in the human rights body are made or dismissed.

"I'm waiting for an official letter or decree to see what exactly the reason for my dismission was," he said.

Depending on who is appointed to replace them, the activists' removal could be seen as a blow to Afghanistan's human rights campaigners.

It may also undermine international efforts to foster good governance in the country, combat corruption and strengthen the rule of law as the West is preparing to withdraw the last of its combat troops by the end of 2014.

Karzai's government has also been seeking to negotiate a deal with the hardline Islamist Taliban, which many activists say could compromise the progress made in securing rights of women and other minorities in the past 10 years.

Tear gas fired at protesters in China seaside town (AP)

BEIJING ? Riot police in a southern Chinese coastal town fired tear gas Friday at protesters, including elderly men and women, on the fourth day of unrest over a planned power plant expansion, according to protesters' accounts and TV footage.

Police and protesters in the town of Haimen squared off near a highway entrance that has become the focal point for protests this week, with residents demanding that authorities release an unknown number of demonstrators.

The town's elders knelt on the road facing a barricade set up by riot police with helmets and shields several hundred yards (meters) away while others lit large incense sticks and planted them into a plastic foam makeshift altar, a protester said by phone.

"They were begging the police to release those people that they've detained and praying that the riot police can see things more clearly," the 20-year-old saleswoman surnamed Yao told The Associated Press by phone.

Haimen's protesters are demanding a halt to the planned expansion of a coal-fired power plant which they say has contributed to what they say is a rise in cancer cases and heavy pollution in the seas, a serious problem for a town where many make their living from fishing.

The protests started Tuesday when thousands of people besieged a Haimen government office and blocked a highway. When riot police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse them, demonstrators hurled rocks, water bottles and bricks in return. Clashes broke out, injuring an unknown number of protesters and police, residents say.

In response to the protests, the local government said Tuesday that it would temporarily suspend the power plant project, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

But protesters say they have not heard directly from authorities on the matter and say several protesters in their teens or early 20s had been detained.

Many of the protesters waved red plastic bags meant to signify red scarves worn by children as part of their school uniforms, photos from the scene showed.

They held up banners saying "Release the people," "Defend our home" and "Oppose construction of power plant."

It was not immediately clear how many people have been taken into police custody, but Xinhua said Thursday that five people had been detained by Wednesday for vandalism during the protests.

Earlier in the day, police fired tear gas at the protesters, said another protester, a man surnamed Lin.

"When they saw that more and more people had come to protest, they fired the tear gas to try to chase us away. At the same time, a big gust of wind blew toward us, so we all had to run," Lin said. "My tears ran continuously. Our eyes are all red."

This is the third time police have used tear gas to disperse protesters in Haimen this week.

"We have no weapons at all. All we are doing is standing here and protesting," Lin added.

Hong Kong's Cable TV showed footage of tear gas clouds being blown toward protesters, scattering the crowd of hundreds of people. Riot police with helmets and shields had formed a blockade at the entrance to the highway.

After three decades of laxly regulated industrialization, China is seeing a surge in protests over such environmental worries.

In September, hundreds of villagers in an eastern Chinese city near Shanghai demonstrated against pollution they blamed on a solar panel factory. In August, 12,000 residents in the northeastern port city of Dalian protested against a chemical plant after waves from a tropical storm broke a dike guarding the plant and raised fears that flood waters could release toxic chemicals.

Last combat troops out of Iraq back at Fort Hood (AP)

FORT HOOD, Texas ? Soldiers in the last U.S. combat brigade to leave Iraq have arrived home in time for Christmas.

Nearly 200 soldiers arrived at Fort Hood on Saturday, while others arrived earlier in the week. The drizzling rain and chilling wind didn't dampen the excitement of relatives who had waited two hours, some wrapped in blankets and holding signs decorated with ornaments and candy canes.

They screamed upon seeing the troops from the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division arrive in buses and march onto a field at the Texas Army post. Then the wives, children and parents ran toward the soldiers, hugging and kissing them, after the announcer ended a brief ceremony by yelling, "Charge!"

1st Sgt. Scott Dawson, who scooped up his two young daughters and kissed his wife, Jessica, said he was glad to be home from his fourth deployment.

"In the future I'm sure this will really hit me," he said, referring to the significance of his being in the last brigade to leave Iraq.

The troops rolled across the Iraq border into neighboring Kuwait a week ago as the nearly nine-year war came to an end. Only about a dozen soldiers in the brigade are still overseas, as are some troops in another brigade that also was part of the convoy of heavily armored personnel carriers that slipped out of Iraq under cover of darkness and in strict secrecy to prevent any final attacks.

"The biggest thing is that he made it," said Capt. Jessica Dawson, who deployed with her husband in 2009. "Like I told the kids, even if he doesn't get back in time, this will be the best Christmas ever because he's out of Iraq."

The 3rd Brigade's commander, Col. Douglas Crissman, said it was a privilege that the brigade was the last to leave Iraq. Preparing for the final exit took a year, he said.

"Fort Hood has given a lot ? blood, treasure, time and sacrifice ? like many Army installations, so being part of the closing days in Iraq is fitting," he said Saturday as he watched soldiers hug their families. "It's great to be part of the end. There's closure. We were the last vehicles to roll out, and that was a privilege."

Fort Hood has about 46,500 active-duty soldiers. Since 2003, more than 565 have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to officials at the Army post.

Packers are the NFL's most popular team

The Dallas Cowboys might call themselves "America's Team," but the Green Bay Packers are the NFL franchise deserving of that title.

So says Public Policy Polling, which recently determined that twice as many fans in the nation chose the Packers as their favorite team, from a list of nine.

The group surveyed 700 American voters from Dec. 16-18, and 22% of those polled said the Packers are their favorite team; followed by 11% for the Cowboys; 8% each for the Chicago Bears, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers; 7% for the New Orleans Saints; 6% for the New England Patriots; 4% for the Washington Redskins; and 2% for the New York Jets.

Twenty-four percent of those polled said they root for some other team or are not sure. (Surely, lots of teams that weren't included on the list of choices would quibble with those results.)

What's more, 22% of those surveyed said Dallas is their least favorite team, followed by Chicago (11%), Green Bay (8%), New England (7%), Washington (7%), Pittsburgh (6%), New York Giants (4%), New York Jets (4%) and New Orleans (1%).

The polling company also ranked the most popular quarterbacks, according to the voters they surveyed.

The winner was Tim Tebow with 15% of the votes, followed by the Mannings (14% for Eli, 12% for Peyton), 10% each for Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, 6% for Michael Vick and 4% each for Ben Roethlisberger and Tony Romo.

Fighting words

As if Giants-Jets isn't hyped enough, some players from both teams let loose with some salvos this week in advance of Saturday's matchup.

Giants receiver Victor Cruz said that "teams aren't really scared" of Jets All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis anymore and that "he's got to earn his money this year. Teams aren't really backing down. I feel like we're going to do the same thing? Until he physically stops us, we're going to throw the ball on him."

Giants teammate Hakeem Nicks initially called Revis "decent," then conceded the cornerback is "great" but that he would play him to a tie.

Those aren't exactly harsh words, but enough to rub the Jets the wrong way.

Whereas Revis shrugged off the remarks, fellow corner Antonio Cromartie said of Cruz and Nicks: "You got guys that are not even Pro Bowl material? Who really cares what they have to say?"

Cromartie's parting shot was aimed at Giants receiver Mario Manningham:

"He let a guy named Victor Cruz come in and take his job."

Passing Panther

Move over, Peyton. Cam Newton is in the passing lane.

Newton, the first-year quarterback for the Panthers, needs 18 more yards passing Saturday against Tampa Bay to record the most by a rookie in NFL history. He has 3,722 yards; Indianapolis' Peyton Manning set the mark with 3,739 in 1998.

Already, one passing record has been set. This is the first season in which two rookies have passed the 3,000-yard milestone. Cincinnati's Andy Dalton has 3,012.

US gray wolves rebound but face uncertain future (AP)

ATLANTA, Mich. ? After devoting four decades and tens of millions of dollars to saving the gray wolf, the federal government wants to get out of the wolf-protection business, leaving it to individual states ? and the wolves themselves ? to determine the future of the legendary predator.

The Obama administration Wednesday declared more than 4,000 wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin have recovered from widespread extermination and will be removed from the endangered species list.

"Gray wolves are thriving in the Great Lakes region," said Dan Ashe, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Coupled with an earlier move that lifted protections in five western states, the decision puts the gray wolf at a historical crossroads ? one that could test both its reputation for resilience and the tolerance of ranchers and hunters who bemoan its attacks on livestock and big game.

Wolves have returned only to isolated pockets of the territory they once occupied, and increasing numbers are dying at the hands of hunters, wildlife agents and ranchers. Now, the legal shield making it a crime to gun them down is being lifted in the only two sections of the lower 48 states where significant numbers exist.

State officials said they will keep wolf numbers healthy, but all three western Great Lakes states will allow wolves to be shot if they are caught assaulting farm animals or pets.

"We now have the ability to kill a wolf that needs killing," said Russ Mason, Michigan's wildlife division chief.

Hunting and trapping also could be allowed. No seasons have been set.

Some environmentalists supported the decision. Others whose lawsuits blocked previous efforts to drop Great Lakes wolves from the endangered list said they were disappointed but had not decided whether to return to court.

"We believe the wolf has not recovered," said Howard Goldman, Minnesota state director for the Humane Society of the United States.

Since being declared endangered in 1974, the American wolf population has grown fivefold ? to about 6,200 animals wandering parts of 10 states outside Alaska.

"They are in the best position they've been in for the past 100 years," said David Mech, a senior scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey in St. Paul, Minn., and a leading wolf expert. The animals' long-term survival will "depend on how much wild land remains available, because wolves are not compatible with areas that are agricultural and have a lot of humans. There's just too much conflict."

Also Wednesday, the government put off a decision on protections in 29 Eastern states that presently have no wolves. The Interior Department said it still was reconsidering its prior claim that wolves in those states historically were a separate species, which effectively would cancel out protections now in place.

Gray wolves in Wyoming are next in line to come off the endangered list, which is expected sometime next year. Similar actions are planned for most remaining western states and the Great Plains.

Since 1991, the federal government has spent $92.6 million on gray wolf recovery programs and state agencies have chipped in $13.9 million, according to documents reviewed by The Associated Press.

"We are ready to declare success in those areas where wolves are now secure, turn over management responsibility to the states and begin to focus our limited resources on other species that are in trouble," said Gary Frazer, assistant director for the Fish and Wildlife Service's endangered species program.

The government plans to continue trying to bolster a struggling Mexican gray wolf population in the desert Southwest and is weighing whether to expand protections for small numbers of the animals that have slipped into the Pacific Northwest from Canada.

But there are no plans to promote their return elsewhere. Federal officials say it's not the government's job to return wolves to their previous range as long as the population is stable.

In Montana and Idaho, where wolves can be legally hunted and trapped, officials want to drive down wolf numbers this winter to curb attacks on farm animals and elk.

Some scientists and advocates say the hunts show what will happen when federal safeguards are lifted elsewhere. The government, they say, is abandoning the recovery effort too soon, before packs can take hold in new areas. Vast, wild territories in the southern Rockies and Northeast are ripe for wolves but unoccupied.

"The habitat is there. The prey is there. Why not give them the chance?" said Chris Amato, New York's assistant commissioner for natural resources.

But federal officials are grappling with tight budgets and political pressure to expand hunting and prevent wolves from invading new turf. They insist the animals known for their eerie howl, graceful lope and ruthless efficiency in slaughtering prey will get by on their own with help from state agencies.

North America was once home to as many as 2 million gray wolves. By the 1930s, fur traders, bounty hunters and government agents had poisoned, trapped and shot almost all wolves outside Canada and Alaska.

The surviving 1,200 were clustered in northern Minnesota in the 1970s. With endangered species protection, their numbers rocketed to nearly 3,000 in the state and they gradually spread elsewhere.

Today, Wisconsin has about 782 wolves and Michigan 687 ? far above what biologists said were needed for sustainable populations.

The success story is hardly surprising in woodlands teeming with deer, said John Vucetich, a biologist at Michigan Tech University. But even in such an ideal setting, the wolves could return only when killing them became illegal.

"What do wolves need to survive?" Vucetich said. "They need forest cover, and they need prey. And they need not to be shot."

Shooting already is happening ? legally or not ? as adventurous wolves range into new regions such as Michigan's Lower Peninsula and the plains of eastern Montana.

Those sightings are unsettling to farmers because resurgent packs have killed thousands of livestock. Some owners may quietly take matters into their own hands ? "shoot, shovel and shut up," said Jim Baker, who raises 60 beef cattle near the village of Atlanta, Mich.

Wolves "could wipe me out in a couple of nights if they wanted," Baker said.

Since the late 1980s, more than 5,000 wolves have been killed legally, according to an AP review of state and federal records. Hundreds more have been killed illegally over the past two decades in the Northern Rockies alone.

Ranchers in some areas are allowed under federal law to shoot wolves to defend their livestock. In the northern Rockies, government wildlife agents have routinely shot wolves from aircraft in response to such attacks. Often that involves trapping a single wolf, fitting it with a radio collar and tracking it back to its den so the entire pack can be killed.

Biologists are confident that neither legal hunts nor poaching will push wolves back to the brink of extinction.

Idaho has been the most aggressive in reducing wolf numbers, offering a 10-month hunting season that sets no limits. State officials say they intend to reduce the population from 750 to as few as 150 ? the minimum the federal government says is needed in each Northern Rockies state to keep the animal off the endangered list.

Studies indicate plentiful habitat remains in other regions, including upstate New York, northern New England and the southern Rockies of Colorado and Utah. But experts say the Fish and Wildlife Service's plan would mean that any wolves wandering into those states could be shot on sight unless protected by state laws.

"Wolves, next to people, are one of the most adaptable animals in the world," said Ed Bangs, a former Fish and Wildlife Service biologist who led the effort to return wolves to the northern Rockies. "The key with wolves is, it's all about human tolerance."

As Romney criticizes Obama, Gingrich alleges smear (AP)

BEDFORD, N.H. ? Sharpening his message ahead of voting in Iowa and New Hampshire, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Tuesday attacked President Barack Obama as Newt Gingrich, his chief rival, accused Romney of running a "negative smear campaign" in the GOP primary.

"We will not surrender our dreams to the failures of this president. We are bigger than the misguided policies and weak leadership of one man. America is bigger than President Obama's failures," Romney said. "This America of long unemployment lines and small dreams is not the America you and I love. ... These troubled years are President Obama's legacy, but they are not our future."

Romney's allies escalated their negative ad campaign against Gingrich on Iowa airwaves as Romney accused Obama of deepening the economic crisis and backing policies that will redistribute wealth instead of creating equal opportunity for people to do well.

Romney, a former businessman, told voters in an evening speech that his policies would turn the U.S. into an "opportunity society" while Obama's vision for an "entitlement society" would make more people dependent on government welfare.

Romney said that Obama "believes that government should create equal outcomes. In an entitlement society, everyone receives the same or similar rewards, regardless of education, effort and willingness to take risk."

Romney's message contrasts with the argument the Democratic president has begun to articulate for his re-election, in which he calls for a society that offers "fair play, a fair shot and a fair share." Obama argues that Republicans put the interests of the wealthy above the middle class.

"Giving more handouts to millionaires, billionaires and large corporations and making the middle class foot the bill are the same flawed policies that led to the economic crisis in the first place," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina told New Hampshire reporters.

Restore Our Future, a special political action committee, or "super PAC," that backs Romney, launched a caustic ad tying Gingrich to Freddie Mac, the quasi-government mortgage company, and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. The spot also hits Gingrich for ethics violations and criticizes his record on abortion.

In Iowa, Gingrich accused Romney of allowing the super PAC to fuel a "negative smear campaign" and called on Romney to demand that ads run on his behalf by such groups be positive. Gingrich said Romney's comments aimed at distancing himself from the anti-Gingrich ads were misleading and false.

"Understand, these are his people running his ads, doing his dirty work while he pretends to be above it," Gingrich told reporters after a campaign appearance at a heavy machinery plant in Ottumwa, Iowa. "I don't object to being outspent. I object to lies. I object to negative smear campaigns."

During his remarks to about 100 people at the Al-Jon Manufacturing plant in eastern Iowa, one voter asked Gingrich about a political mailing he had received describing the former congressman as a globalist.

"I think these guys hire consultants who get drunk, sit around and write stupid ads," Gingrich replied. "Every one of these candidates should take responsibility for the lies they are putting up." He offered no evidence for his assertions.

Gingrich has pledged to remain "relentlessly positive" as he campaigns for the nomination and said Tuesday that he wasn't violating that promise but simply correcting the record.

Romney refused earlier Tuesday to disavow the group's ads, saying it would be illegal for him to coordinate with the super PAC. He did say that such groups are a "disaster" and have made a "mockery" of the presidential campaign.

"I'm not allowed to communicate with a super PAC in any way, shape or form," Romney said. "If we coordinate in any way whatsoever, we go to the big house."

Gingrich read Romney's remarks to reporters and then promptly labeled them "baloney." He again urged Romney to demand that the negative spots be taken down.

A 2010 Supreme Court decision paved the way for such groups to accept unlimited amounts of money from donors. The political campaigns are limited to accepting $2,500 per donor.

Gingrich said Restore Our Future was created by Romney's former staff and funded "by his friends' personal wealth."

Gingrich's own former top aide, Rick Tyler, has joined a pro-Gingrich PAC called Winning Our Future. The former House speaker said he would expect the PAC to adhere to his positive strategy.

"If Rick Tyler runs a single negative ad, I will disown the PAC and discourage anyone from giving them a penny," Gingrich said.

Gingrich has seen his candidacy slide in polls as a barrage of ads attacking him blanket the Iowa airwaves in advance of the state's first-in-the-nation caucuses Jan. 3. He has been trying to counter the assault while still maintaining a positive campaign.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, didn't mention Gingrich during his speech. He was using the address to open four straight days of campaigning in New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first primary on Jan. 10. It's a must-win contest in the campaign strategy designed by the Romney team.

Two weeks remain until voting begins Jan. 3 with the leadoff caucuses in Iowa, though Romney will campaign in New Hampshire through Christmas in a sign of the state's importance to his political strategy.

Google brings graphing calculator functionality to search, still can't play 'Snake'

Well, Google's gone an done it, turning the Internet into one giant graphing calculator. The software behemoth has brought graphing capabilities to search, letting users input a mathematical function into the engine -- or multiple functions, separated by commas. And, this being Google, users can explore the graphs more closely by zooming in and out and panning across. According to the company, it "covers an extensive range of single variable functions including trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic and their compositions." If you know what all of that means, we're guessing you're pretty psyched about this news.

Verizon Motorola Droid Razr and Lapdock 100 Combo Review

When Motorola burst onto the Android scene with the original Droid (a.k.a. Milestone), the company quickly ramped up to one of the more noteworthy smartphone makers. Then, over the course of a couple of years, their reputation dropped as their phones became less and less innovative, and less and less competitive against the likes of [...]

The iPhone gets banned in Syria to curb protest coverage (Digital Trends)

iphone via bgrSyrian authorities have targeted the iPhone in their latest efforts to block protestor?s ability to communicate. The Apple smartphone has officially been singled out for a countrywide ban.

Pro-democracy activists are being served with notices by the Syrian Finance Ministry?s Customs Department which state: ?The authorities warn anyone against using the iPhone in Syria,? according to a Lebanese news service named Al Nashara. Owning as well as importing iPhones is banned and the penalty is confiscation and prosecution.

An activist told Israeli newspaper Ha?aretz, ?It is enough for any tourist or guest visiting Syria to own an iPhone to be a spy suspected.?

The Syrian government hopes to prevent activists from recording government violence against protesters. Foreign media have already been banned from covering events in the country since March. It?s not clear whether the ban extends to other smartphones with cameras, but Macgasm proposes that the iPhone was targeted due to a new application named Souri Wa Bas that helped connect and boost moraleiphone syria statement among regime fighters.

The protests in Syria began early this year, escalating into a full blown uprising in March. The people are asking for a regime change, democracy and wider freedoms including speech and assembly. According to the United Nations, since March more than 4,000 have died in relation to the protests. Syrian authorities have since used a variety of tactics to suppress the discontent electronically, including a counter Facebook propaganda movement and going so far as to enact a countrywide internet black out.

?Steve Jobs must be turning in his grave on learning that his iconic device is banned in his home country,? an anonymous activists pointed out, though the Apple co-founder was born in California. However, Jobs? biological father, Abdulfattah ?John? Jandali, happens to be Syrian born. Jandali has uploaded a video to YouTube in support of the Syrian people.
