How a joint pain remedy is curing my arthritis pain without killing me. www.provailen.com This is my personal story about how i had an accident 20 years ago. I have had 3 spinal surgeries, 3 knee surgeries and i have lots of arthritis issues. I have been taking about 10 different prescription meds, celibrix or celebra my anti-inflammatory medication, vicodin and tramadol for pain, flexeril and soma for muscle relaxers. I have taken these specific meds or similar for about 20 years now, about 8 month ago I woke up with a bleeding stomach ulcer and was vomiting blood. I then had to go see a gastroenterologist, besides my normal orthopedic doctor, i then received Tagament, Peptcin something and Famotidine now i also always had a bottle of tums and the pink stuff peto bismol to fight the late night indigestion. 90 days or so after i was on all this stuff for my stomach, and back and knee i cold not sleep. Imagine i now also have Insomnia and after weeks of virtually no sleep doctor prescribed Ambien a sleeping pill. What really shook me up was when my orthopedic doctor had me doing liver tests every 60 days to monitor my liver, I was told of the problems of anti-inflammatory but honestly I did not think they could be that serious. Now looking back and looking at the cocktail of medications i was on you can tell it would eventually get me. Well liver test in, doctor tells me i have to get off meds or risk permanent liver damage to the point i might need a liver transplant. I ?

A new analysis done by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers has found that physical activity either mild or intense and before or after menopause may reduce breast cancer risk, but substantial weight gain may negate these benefits.

Published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings indicate that women can reduce their breast cancer risk by exercising and maintaining their weight.

While studies have shown that physical activity reduces breast cancer risk, many questions remain. For example, how often, how long and how intense does physical activity have to be to provide benefits? Also, do women with all body types experience a reduced risk when they exercise, and does exercise reduce the risk of all types of breast cancer?

To investigate, Lauren McCullough, a doctoral candidate at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, and her colleagues looked for a link between recreational physical activity, done at different time points in life, and the risk of developing breast cancer.

The study included 1,504 women with breast cancer (233 noninvasive and 1,271 invasive) and 1,555 women without breast cancer who were 20 to 98 years old and were part of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project, an investigation of possible environmental causes of breast cancer.

Women who exercised either during their reproductive or postmenopausal years had a reduced risk of developing breast cancer. Women who exercised 10 to 19 hours per week experienced the greatest benefit with an approximate 30 percent reduced risk. Risk reductions were observed at all levels of intensity, and exercise seemed to reduce the risk of hormone receptor positive breast cancers, the most commonly diagnosed tumor type among American women.

"The observation of a reduced risk of breast cancer for women who engaged in exercise after menopause is particularly encouraging given the late age of onset for breast cancer," McCullough said.

When the researchers looked at the joint effects of physical activity, weight gain and body size, they found that even active women who gained a significant amount of weight particularly after menopause had an increased risk of developing breast cancer, indicating that weight gain can eliminate the beneficial effects of exercise on breast cancer risk.

Describing how pancreatic cancer cells produce a protein that attracts the body's immune cells and tricks them into helping cancer cells grow is a pair of recent studies. This research also reveals that blocking the protein may be an effective way to treat pancreatic cancer. The research is published by Cell Press in the June 12th issue of the journal Cancer Cell.

"We found that simply disabling the ability of tumors to make this molecule leads to a house-of-cards effect that resulted in massive tumor death in experimental models," says Dr. Robert Vonderheide of the Perelman School of Medicine and Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, who is the senior author on the first paper.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly types of cancer, mostly because of its aggressiveness and its ability to suppress the cancer fighting properties of the immune system. Essentially, all pancreatic cancer cells harbor a mutation in the KRAS gene. Two teams of researchers looked to see how mutated KRAS gives pancreatic cancer its distinguishing properties.

Using mouse models of pancreatic cancer, the two groups each found that mutated KRAS triggers pancreatic tumors to express a protein called GM-CSF. They also discovered that tumor-derived GM-CSF recruits immature immune cells to the areas surrounding the tumor and then coaxes those cells to mature into so-called myeloid-derived suppressor cells, which suppress the surveillance function of other immune cells that normally seek out and destroy foreign and malignant cells. In this way, pancreatic cells escape being seen by the body's immune system and are free to grow and divide. Blocking GM-CSF production, however, inhibited myeloid-derived suppressor cells and enabled the immune system to halt tumor development.

The researchers also showed that human pancreatic cancer cells prominently express GM-CSF, indicating that the findings could lead to new treatments for patients. "Our studies suggest a therapeutic strategy by which the antitumor properties of a patient's immune system can be restored," says Dr. Dafna Bar-Sagi of the NYU School of Medicine, who is the senior author of the second paper.

Nas' Father's Day Brunch Salutes All Dads

'Mother's Day is #1, but every once in a while, let's remember the fathers too,' Nas tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

Nas takes being a dad seriously. On his debut 1994 album, Illmatic, God's Son lightly touched on his first forays into fatherhood, and as his catalog grew, so did his subject matter. In 2004, he saluted his own pop, Olu Dara, and even collaborated with his old man on his "Bridging the Gap" single. But this year on Father's Day, the Queensbridge rap great plans to toss a nod to all dads with a special brunch in his native New York City.

"I'm doing a Father's Day brunch to just celebrate the fathers out there," Nas told MTV News on Tuesday. "It's important that we acknowledge that, because family is a very important thing, and Mother's Day is #1, but every once in a while, let's remember the fathers too."

For the brunch, Nasir hooked up with New York radio station Hot 97 to hold a contest. Fans wrote in and explained what makes their dad great, and the writers of the best entries get to spend the day with the rap star.

It all falls in line with Nas' latest single, "Daughters." Rather than romanticize the role that dads play in their children's lives, Esco tells a story of real-life mistakes that both he and his teenage daughter Destiny Jones have made throughout the years.

"When I cut the record, it was like my daughter was on Twitter and tweeting crazy stuff, and I'm like, 'Yo, what are you doin'?' " Nas recalled.

The rapper soon realized that his girl had a public persona online much like a rapper would through his music and videos. By tweeting pictures of condoms and sending other suggestive messages, Destiny came off as a wild child when various blog sites picked up on her activities.

"She was creating this image on Twitter, this raunchy kinda style that was more for the Internet world, but not realizing people pick up these sorta things and put it on their websites," he explained. "I think my record is me being angry at her, angry at myself and just really shouting out to fathers out there."

While "Daughters" is new, the type of self-reflection the Illmatic MC displays on the record is not dissimilar from other records in his catalog. On his 2002 LP God's Son, Nas opened up about his mother's death from cancer on the song "Dance." It's his introspection that truly makes Nas great. "I understand people might not get it, but this is how I express myself," he said.

What are your plans for Father's Day? Let us know in the comments!

Jobless claims jump as job market struggles

By Patrick Rizzo

New claims for unemployment aid rose unexpectedly in the latest week, signaling that the labor market remained on the defensive and the recovery was stumbling along.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that claims rose a seasonally-adjusted 6,000 to 386,000 in the week ended June 9.?Even the four-week moving average, considered a more accurate gauge of the labor market, jumped, gaining 3,500 to 382,000. It was the measure's third straight week of gains.

Economists had been expecting new claims to drop to 375,000.

"We've been on the higher side for the past two months on average. You cannot explain this away with normal random volatility. It has not been a marked deterioration, but there has been some slippage in the strength in the labor market,"?Michael Moran, chief economist for Daiwa Securities, told Reuters.

The report?was another in a series of setbacks for?those seeking an improvement?in the job market. Among them: President Barack Obama who is running for reelection and needs the economy's cooperation in his battle against his GOP rival Mitt Romney.

The rise in jobless claims over the past few weeks suggests that hiring has slowed and the pace of layoffs has quickened as U.S. businesses react warily to a sluggish recovery at home and the financial crisis in Europe.

CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the latest numbers on jobless claims & Consumer Price Index, and a look at the impact on the market, with CNBC's Steve Liesman.

'Maple Spring' protests: Crackdown roils Quebec

Christinne Muschi / Reuters

Thousands of demonstrators march against student tuition hikes in downtown Montreal, Quebec, on May 22. Tens of thousands marched in a rally marking 100 days of student protests.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Demonstrators are filling Quebec's streets daily to support a four-month-old student strike against a tuition hike that has morphed into a movement against efforts to curb the right to protest and to impose austerity measures in Canada's largest province.

The walkout over a 75 percent increase in university and college?tuition fees began on Feb. 13 with about 11,000 students. By late March, more than 300,000 people -- or about three-quarters of Quebec's student population -- were participating,?organizers say.

The number of striking students had dipped to around 160,000 when the?province's center-left?government passed an emergency law on May 18 limiting where and when protests could be held and imposing potential fines of more than $100,000 on violators.

But instead of quelling the demonstrations, "Law 78"?drove?people who were unaffected by the tuition hike but angry over the legislation onto the streets, revitalized the strikers?and?sparked court challenges amid claims it endangers freedoms of expression and association.

'A lot of anger'
The government also suspended classes until mid-August, essentially putting the students in a lockout.?

The movement has been dubbed the "Printemps ?rable" -- or "Maple Spring" -- a play of words on the Arab Spring ("Printemps Arabe") protests?that swept across the Middle East and North Africa.

?I think that our strike arrived at a good moment where a vast majority of the population has a lot of anger against the government,? Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, a spokesman for student association?CLASSE, told msnbc.com. ?This increase in tuition fees is only one part of the large broader austerity reforms? that include moves to privatize health care. Many Canadians consider universal health care to be a defining characteristic of their national identity.

"I think our mobilization just gives the opportunity to all those people who were just waiting ? to go into the street,? he added.??The student movement ? is really a movement to refute this change of the political cultural of Quebec."

1,600 arrested
Quebec, a?predominantly French-speaking province situated between Ontario, New Brunswick and Labrador,?has a history of student activism, including a strike in 2005 that lasted more than 50 days.?

?The scale and the length of the conflict is unprecedented,? said Marcos Ancelovici, an assistant professor of sociology at McGill University in Montreal who studies social movements. ?The movement so far is really showing an incredible capacity to mobilize large numbers of people, and the government did not anticipate that at all, they didn?t see it coming.?

Montreal police said at least 1,600 people had been arrested in connection with demonstrations as of Friday, though they reported dozens more on their Twitter account over the weekend when the Formula 1 Grand Prix race was held. At least five of the arrests were for people violating a new city bylaw that bans wearing scarves, masks and balaclavas at protests.

Police detain a demonstrator before a cocktail party kicking off the Canadian Grand Prix festivities in Montreal on June 7.

Four student associations are seeking a freeze on the tuition hike and have participated in four failed negotiation sessions with the government.?

In its budget report calling for the hikes, the government said that all of the universities had finished each fiscal period with a deficit since 2005. The total deficit for the institutions reached $469 million in 2009.

By 2010, the universities were underfinanced by an estimated $602 million, the government said, citing a report by the nonprofit Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities.

The financing plan?would bring in an additional revenue of $826 million, with $418 million coming from the government, that will go to improving the quality of education and research. About 35 percent of the new revenue will go to providing financial aid.

Even after the hikes, Quebec?s tuition fees will remain?among the lowest in Canada, the CBC reported.

Though some observers criticized the province's leaders for not trying to resolve the issue earlier, the government said in a statement on May 31 that despite "constructive" exchanges between the two sides -- and counter-offers aimed at brokering a deal -- it was "impossible" to reach an agreement.

The provincial government acted in "good faith" to try and find an acceptable solution for all parties to exit the crisis, said new Education Minister Michelle Courchesne, noting that the students had rejected tuition hikes entirely.

The former education minister, Line Beauchamp, resigned in mid-May over the issue, according to the CBC.

The protests had begun to flag around that time because Premier Jean Charest's government appeared unwilling to back off the $1,582 (over five years -- or about?$316 per annum)?in planned hikes from the current $2,110 tuition, or to offer significant concessions, Ancelovici said.

But Law 78, a "special" measure specifically designed to subdue the student movement until the law expires in July 2013, has?so far only served to galvanize opposition to the Liberal party's government and shifted momentum back to the protesters.

PhotoBlog: Quebec moves to restore order as striking students clash with police

Under it, students face fines in the thousands of dollars for blocking entrances to universities, while their associations are potentially subject to fines of more than $100,000. It requires police to be given protest itineraries eight hours before?any gathering of more than 50 people.

'Its scope is very wide'
The Quebec Bar Association denounced Law 78 as endangering the freedoms of expression and association. A legal nonprofit has already filed two challenges against the legislation, said Pierre Thibault, an assistant dean at the University of Ottawa?s law school. He believes at least parts of the law would be struck down as unconstitutional.

?It?s quite unusual to have a law like Law 78 because its scope is very wide and that is part of the problem,? he said. ?How can you impose this punishment to students? It?s hard for them to even pay their ? fees.?

Students protest against Law 78 in Montreal on June 4.

Law 78 also triggered a new style of protest in Montreal: A college teacher reportedly called for a type of demonstration made popular in Chile, Argentina and Spain to be used on the nightly marches: the banging of pots and pans, called ?les casseroles? in French.

This law ?galvanized everybody because suddenly people said well this is completely outrageous, we cannot let our freedoms, our rights be ? restricted in this way,? Ancelovici said, noting that many families and senior citizens were now attending the protests and neighborhoods were organizing into assemblies.

Activists also grabbed hold of the concept and called for similar demonstrations to be held across Canada and in some European and American cities. Some in Occupy Wall Street are using the red felt square worn by Quebec protesters as a symbol of student debt (meaning "totally in the red") and are holding ongoing casserole protests in the U.S.

?I think the reason why people have been so eager to jump on board with this ?. is because people feel that they are all having the same problem and that problem is with a broken economic system,? said Ethan Cox, a writer for alternative media nonprofit rabble.ca who helped to organize the casserole protests outside of Quebec. ?That problem of austerity, that problem of misplaced priorities is a global problem and is one that affects people in the U.S. as much as it does here in Canada. And so I think that?s why it?s really struck a nerve.?

The protest has resonated with students in the U.S., where student debt passed $1 trillion earlier this year. Some New York City students have gone to Montreal to meet protesters and another group in Ohio has been discussing organizing Quebec-style student unions, said Jacob Remes, an assistant professor of public affairs at Empire State College who studies social movements in Canada and the United States.

Though Remes didn?t think a nationwide movement akin to what was happening in Quebec could occur in the U.S. due to the organizing it would require, he thought it could be possible in smaller locales.

In Quebec, not all are on board with the protests, Ancelovici said, noting that some of his students at the English-speaking McGill University were concerned about completing the term so they didn?t join the strike. Participation was also lower outside of Montreal, he said.

A poll conducted online after Law 78 passed showed a near split in sentiment over the legislation, with 51 percent supporting it and 49 percent opposed, according to the Montreal Gazette. The poll of 1,500 people also found that 64 percent sided with the government?s plan to raise the tuition, while 36 percent backed the freeze that the students are seeking.

With school out, Nadeau-Dubois acknowledged that it would be hard to keep up the momentum of the protests during the summer but said they would focus on the pots-and-pans brigade led by neighborhood groups. No matter the outcome, he said they had already won something.

?This movement gave us a lot of confidence in ourselves," he said. "We really realized our collective force, our collective ability to mobilize and to change things, and yeah, a lot of students are beginning to realize that we are doing something historical actually and that?s why, even if the individual cost of the strike is very heavy, they are ? continuing to be on strike because they know that they are doing something that is bigger than themselves.?

NATO limits airstrikes on Afghan homes

(AP) ? The U.S.-led military coalition in Afghanistan is limiting airstrikes against houses to self-defense for troops, following a strike last week that killed women and children alongside insurgents, a spokesman for the alliance said Monday.

Such airstrikes are now being designated a weapon of last resort to rescue soldiers, cutting back their use.

Though airstrikes on homes are a small part of the international operations in Afghanistan, they have brewed resentment among Afghans, even when there are no casualties, because of the sense that homes and privacy have been violated.

Civilian deaths from such operations have threatened to derail the Afghan-U.S. alliance.

A pact signed by the Afghan government and the U.S. military in April putting Afghans in charge of joint raids in villages was supposed to ease these tensions, but the aftermath of Wednesday's airstrike against a home in eastern Afghanistan has shown that the Americans are still making the decisions on the ground.

Afghan officials have said that 18 civilians were killed in the strike. President Hamid Karzai rebuked U.S. forces for failing to consult their Afghan counterparts before calling for an airstrike in the house where insurgents had taken cover. NATO discovered that civilians had died the next morning when villagers piled the bodies into vans to display to Afghan officials.

Karzai demanded in a meeting Saturday night with NATO and U.S. forces commander Gen. John Allen that the international troops ban all airstrikes on homes.

A spokesman for the alliance, Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, said Monday that airstrikes were being severely curtailed.

"We will continue to conduction combat operations against insurgents who use civilian dwellings, but we will not use air-delivered munitions against civilian dwellings unless it is a question of self-defense for our troops on the ground," Cummings said.

Commanders previously could order airstrikes against insurgents on houses, as long as they were confident that there were no civilians present. Cummings says that the new restrictions mean commanders will not be able to call in a strike unless it is necessary to save the lives of their troops. This applies even if it is clear there are no civilians in the house.

"This restriction in no way limits our ability to take the fight to the enemy," Cummings said. He said that of about 3,000 NATO airstrikes in the past six months, only 10 of them were against civilian homes. Of those 10, seven resulted in civilian casualties, he said.

In addition, he said, NATO forces are in negotiations with Afghan officials about how to involve the Afghan military in decisions on airstrikes. Afghan forces have already had to sign off on joint operations in villages, but there has not been a procedure for involving them in the often split-second decision of when to call in air power.

Last year was the deadliest on record for civilians in the Afghan war, with 3,021 killed as insurgents stepped up suicide attacks and roadside bombs, according to the United Nations. The number of Afghan civilians killed dropped 36 percent in the first four months of this year compared with last year, though U.N. officials have said that a likely cause of the drop in violence was the particularly harsh winter.

Anti-government forces, including the Taliban and other militants, were responsible for 79 percent of civilian casualties in the first four months of this year, according to the U.N. tally, while Afghan and international forces were responsible for 9 percent.

Violence has started to increase with the warm summer weather, including regular reports of civilian casualties. Nine civilians were killed Monday in two separate incidents, including one in which an ambulance rushing a pregnant woman to a hospital struck a roadside bomb. The woman and four of her family members were killed in the blast in Sar-e-Pul province, the Interior Ministry said.

Another two women and two children were killed Monday in the east when a mortar fired by insurgents hit their home in Ghazni province's Gilan district, said Ghazni provincial spokesman Fazel Ahmad Sabawon. The militants appeared to be aiming for a government building nearby, he said.

In another development, the United Nations reported that it fired three Afghan officials as part of an investigation into allegations of fraud in the management of a $1.4 billion fund for the training and support of the Afghan police force. The program, which pays police salaries, is an important part of the effort to maintain security in Afghanistan as international forces draw down over the next two years.

"This ongoing investigation indicates zero tolerance toward fraud," said Brian Hansford, a spokesman for the U.N. Development Program, which oversees the Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan. He declined to give specific information on those fired or the exact accusations. It was not immediately clear how much money was involved.

Also in Kabul on Monday, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian met with Karzai and coalition officials, including Allen, as part of his trip to pay homage to four French soldiers who were killed on Saturday in eastern Kapisa province and visit the five other French soldiers who were wounded.

The recently elected French President Francois Hollande has promised to pull France's 2,000 combat troops out of Afghanistan by the end of the year ? well before the 2014 goal for the majority of NATO combat troops to leave the country.

The defense minister said the recent deaths had not altered France's withdrawal plan, but stressed that some French forces would stay to help train Afghan security forces and help manage the airport in Kabul. About 1,400 French soldiers are expected to remain.

"Our presence in the coalition will be maintained until the end of the coalition mission in 2014," he said.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? More than a year after a tsunami devastated Japan, killing thousands of people and washing millions of tons of debris into the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. government and West Coast states don't have a cohesive plan for cleaning up the rubble that floats to American shores.

There is also no firm handle yet on just what to expect.

The Japanese government estimates that 1.5 million tons of debris is floating in the ocean from the catastrophe. Some experts in the United States think the bulk of that trash will never reach shore, while others fear a massive, slowly-unfolding environmental disaster.

"I think this is far worse than any oil spill that we've ever faced on the West Coast or any other environmental disaster we've faced on the West Coast" in terms of the debris' weight, type and geographic scope, said Chris Pallister, president of a group dedicated to cleaning marine debris from the Alaska coastline.

David Kennedy, assistant administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Ocean Service, told a U.S. Senate panel last month that in most cases debris removal decisions will fall to individual states. Funding hasn't been determined.

U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, and other West Coast political leaders, have called that scenario unacceptable, saying tsunami debris poses a pending national emergency. "If this was a one-time event all at once, we'd declare it an emergency and we'd be on the ground like that," he said, during the hearing he led.

One astonishing example of how the unexpected can suddenly appear occurred Wednesday in Oregon when a concrete and metal dock that measured 66 feet long, seven feet tall and 19 feet wide, washed ashore a mile north of Newport. A Japanese consulate official in Portland confirmed that the dock came from the northern Japanese city of Misawa, cut loose in the tsunami of March 11, 2011.

"I think that the dock is a forerunner of all the heavier stuff that's coming later, and amongst that heavier stuff are going to be a lot of drums full of chemicals that we won't be able to identify," Pallister said.

His group, Gulf of Alaska Keeper, works in the same region devastated by the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which dumped 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound in 1989.

Tsunami debris is tough to monitor. Winds and ocean currents regularly change, while rubbish can break up. Some trash, like fishing gear, kerosene and gas containers and building supplies, can be tied to the tsunami only anecdotally. But in other cases ? a soccer ball and a derelict fishing boat in Alaska and a motorcycle in British Columbia, for example ? items have been traced back to the disaster through their owners.

NOAA projects the debris having spread over an area roughly three times the size of the contiguous United States, but can't pinpoint when or how much might eventually reach the coasts of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii.

An independent group of scientists and environmental activists are scheduled to sail aboard the "Sea Dragon" from Japan Saturday to an area north of the Hawaiian islands, with plans to zigzag through the debris, document what's floating and try to determine what might reach the West Coast.

"You have a unique experiment," said Marcus Eriksen, a researcher at the Algalita Marine Research Institute in Long Beach, Calif., who is leading the expedition. "You have entire homes and all their contents ... anything you may find in a Japanese home could be floating in the ocean still intact."

Seattle-based oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer, who has been tracking ocean trash for 20 years, predicts the main mass of tsunami debris will reach the U.S. coast from Northern California to southeast Alaska as early as October, with the beginning of fall storms.

Cleanup plans should be finalized no later than September, Ebbesmeyer cautioned. There may also be sensitive issues to be decided, he said, including how to deal with any human remains or personal mementos.

But just who will clean up the debris and who will pay for it hasn't been fully determined.

Begich wants to make at least $45 million available for local community groups to conduct clean-up efforts. Gulf of Alaska Keeper believes Congress should set aside $50 million a year for four years.

As it stands now, NOAA has $618,000 allocated to clean up tsunami debris. The agency's total marine debris program budget could drop by 26 percent to $3.4 million, under President Obama's proposed budget.

Marine trash isn't a new problem. The ocean is littered with all kinds of things that can trap and kill wildlife, hurt human health and navigation and blight beaches.

NOAA has previously given grants to local groups for cleanup work. The agency expects the tsunami debris to simply add to the ongoing problem of massive amounts of trash flowing into the ocean every day.

Volunteers in California report their efforts being stretched thin just in dealing with day-to-day rubbish. Seasonal opportunity for cleanup could close as early as September at spots in Alaska, where some beaches are accessible only by boat or aircraft and removing trash can be difficult and expensive. Washington has monitored some incoming debris for radioactivity.

Eben Schwartz, marine debris program manager for the California Coastal Commission, said more recognition needs to be given to the fact that it will be beach cleanup volunteers who respond to tsunami debris.

"Given that, I would like to see more state and federal support for the volunteer programs that will be taking the lead," he said. They're going to need help, resources and funding, he said.

NOAA's marine debris program expects solid plans from the states within the next few months. The governors of Washington, Oregon and California, as well as the premier of British Columbia, have said they will work together to manage debris.

Widespread or concentrated die-offs of marine animals aren't expected, said John Hocevar, oceans campaign director for Greenpeace, but there could be local impacts.

NOAA officials say they don't think there's any radiation risk from the debris, despite the meltdown at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

Merrick Burden, executive director of the Marine Conservation Alliance in Alaska and Washington, said he thinks states, local governments, volunteers and industries including fishing and tourism need to pull together to clean up debris, and not simply wait and hope for federal funds.

"One of the things standing in the way is a unified, coordinated approach to this," he said.

Pallister worried that a lack of awareness may hamper the effort.

"You just don't have that visceral, gut-wrenching reaction to having oiled otters and drowned seabirds in that crude to get the public pumped up about it," he said of the tsunami debris. "And even if you could get the public pumped up, again, you don't have that culprit to go after ? a bad guy. It's kind of a tough one to deal with."

Discover How Small Business Marketing Online Can Make You a ...

Owners realize they need business marketing to help develop and strengthen their brand, but most don?t know how or where tobegin. A common practice is to take out ads in phone directories or local newspapers. However, this tactic rarely brings in a lot of customers.

Owners then feel that business marketing are a waste of time and money, so they do nothing to advertise their company. To succeed in today?s marketplace requires making use of several online and offline techniques. Gone are the days of depending on phone books to attract customers.

Today, every small business needs to have a website; engage in blogging; produce marketing videos and podcasts; deliver electronic newsletters; write press releases; take part in in social media marketing, and communicate with consumers through mobile marketing.

That?s enough to overburden anyone, but the fact is all of the above need to be used to maximize brand exposure. A simple fix is to hire an online marketing agency to handle tasks and observe all of your results.

Owners often say they are unable to afford to hire a professional agency. The fact is it?s substantially more costly to take on the task in-house and results will be less than hoped for. Working with professionals offers many positive aspects including higher revenue that should cover consulting and advertising costs.

Local business marketing is a complex process that needs to interconnect each method together to maximize return on investment. Learning Internet marketing strategies requires some sort of education, whether from an marketing coach or instructor.

Developing a quality business website that is SEO-friendly and contains search engine optimized content is very difficult. To acquire top rankings at search engines requires knowledge about backend coding, SEO keywords, latent semantic indexing (LSI}, and security, privacy, and disclosure laws. Anyone unfamiliar with these terms needs to hire professional web designer and copywriters.

Blogs are a exceptional way to connect with customers and build brand awareness. However, content has to be produced on a regular basis and also has to be optimized for the Web. Linking blog entries to website content is a good link building process that can enhance search positions. Other link building techniques include creating online videos, podcasts, and articles; linking to other blogs and websites; press releases, and social media outlets.

Many owners find it beneficial to employ?business marketing consulting to learn about the best Internet marketing techniques. Pros can help owners develop a strategic business marketing plan to integrate all kinds of marketing campaigns together.

Soon you can have lab-grown, stingray shoes at $1,800 a pop

1 day

If you?ve got a shoe fetish, a spare $1,800?and don?t mind skin from genetically engineered stingrays on your feet, then head on over to Rayfish.com and order yourself a truly unique pair of shoes.

Visitors to the company?s website can mix and match patterns from the fish and the company will select coloration and patterning genes to grow you a transgenic stingray with your custom design.

?As the ray grows and matures, it expresses the predetermined patterns on its skin,? the company explains on its website.?

The fish grow in an aquaculture facility. Once harvested, workers at a factory in Chon Buri, Thailand, stitch together your shoes, including thick laces and sturdy soles.

?With their unparalleled degree of customization ? no two pairs are alike, even at a genetic level ? these shoes should appeal to a diverse group of sneaker lovers,? RayFish.com explains in a press release.

The company?s CEO, Raymond Ong, calls the shoes the ?world?s first bio-customized sneakers.

General production is slated to begin in late 2012, with shoes costing approximately $1,800, depending on shoe size and the complexity of the design.?

For those who can?t wait, the company is hosting a design contest to win a free pair and is also accepting a limited number of orders, presumably closer to the current production cost of between $14,800 and $16,200.

While these shoes could appeal to shoe lovers, if we get comfortable designing our clothes with transgenic stingrays, does that bring us closer to designing our own babies?
