Another vertebrate species reported extinct from the Hawaiian Islands

ScienceDaily (Mar. 31, 2012) ? A species of lizard is now extinct from the Hawaiian Islands, making it the latest native vertebrate species to become extirpated from this tropical archipelago.

The copper striped blue-tailed skink (Emoia impar) -- a sleek lizard with smooth, polished scales and a long, sky-blue tail -- was last confirmed in the Na'Pali coast of Kauai in the 1960s. But repeated field surveys on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawai'i islands from 1988 to 2008 have yielded no sightings or specimens.

"No other landscape in these United States has been more impacted by extinction events and species invasions in historic times than the Hawaiian Islands, with as yet unknown long-term cascading consequences to the ecosystem," said U.S. Geological Survey director Marcia McNutt. "Today, we close the book on one more animal that is unlikely to ever be re-established in this fragile island home."

"This skink was once common throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and in fact the species can still be found on many other island groups in the tropical Pacific," says Robert Fisher, a biologist with the USGS Western Ecological Research Center. "That's what makes this extinction so intriguing: if an otherwise common animal can be completely extirpated from one island ecosystem but not others, then what does that tell us?"

Fisher and colleague Ivan Ineich of the Mus?um national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris announced their findings on E. impar this month in the international conservation journal "Oryx," published by Fauna and Flora International.

Small animals like this skink are prone to what Fisher and Ineich call "cryptic extinction" -- when a species is easily confused with similar species that their extinction can go unnoticed for decades.

"The extinction of native Hawaiian bird species is well documented, partly because their presence and sounds had been so distinctive to humans," says Ineich, who is also a researcher with the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). "But without regular field surveys, we tend to overlook the disappearances of smaller, secretive species, along with the causes of their extinction."

While the exact causes of the skink's Hawaiian extinction is unclear, Fisher and Ineich note that island extinctions around the world often share similar factors, such as the loss of habitat due to uncontrolled human development. Another is competition or predation from invasive species accidentally or intentionally introduced through human migration and activity.

"There's some evidence that an invasive ant was preying on these skinks," Fisher says. "That's a new factor we'll need to examine as we look out for other at-risk species in the Pacific islands."

GOP's Ryan endorses Romney for party's nomination

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Paul Ryan, the powerful chairman of the House Budget Committee, is endorsing Mitt Romney for the Republican presidential nomination.

There had been speculation the Wisconsin Republican would fall into the Romney column, and Ryan did so Friday morning in an interview on Fox News Channel's "Fox and Friends."

Ryan says Romney is best suited to beat President Barack Obama.

He also says that Romney has emerged as the candidate most deserving of the GOP rank and file's backing. Ryan tells Fox he's convinced that Romney "has the skills, the tenacity and the courage" to lead the party in the race against Obama this fall.

He also says he's convinced that "if we drag this thing on through summer, it's going to be harder" to turn Obama out of office.

Baylor pounds Tennessee 77-58 for Final Four bid

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Top-seeded Baylor rolled through the Des Moines regional with such ease that the only stress the Bears had to endure was a late-game scuffle with Tennessee that saw Brittney Griner ejected.

Baylor can breathe easy knowing Griner won't be suspended for the Final Four.

The Lady Vols have much more to worry about in the weeks ahead.

Brittney Griner had 23 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks before being bounced with less than a minute left for leaving the bench and Baylor pounded Tennessee 77-58 Monday night to advance to the Final Four.

The Lady Bears (38-0) are back in the national semifinals for the second time in three years and will face Stanford on Sunday night in Denver.

"Definitely happy that we got past this game. It's not over," Griner said. "It gets tougher as you go."

Should Baylor win it all, it'll become the first men's or women's team in NCAA history to finish a year with 40 wins. The powerhouse Bears are the heavy favorites to do just that, having dispatched of Georgia Tech and Tennessee by an average of 17 points.

Neither of those games ever seemed that close, either.

"We're so happy, but you can't relax," Baylor's Destiny Williams said. "We have two more games left."

Jubilation was the last thing on the minds of Tennessee (27-9), whose seniors became its first four-year Lady Vols class not to reach a Final Four.

But that was just a side note considering that their legendary coach Pat Summitt has yet to say if she'll return for a 39th season. She announced in August she'd been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.

"This team is about Pat Summitt. This team has battled all year," said Tennessee associate head coach Holly Warlick as she fought back tears. "I'm proud of them. I thought our team and coaching staff obviously was in a difficult situation. But I thought this team was responsive. I wouldn't trade anything that we did this year."

Baylor held Tennessee to just 30.3 percent shooting from the floor. Much of that was because of the inside presence of the 6-foot-8 Griner, who was just one block shy of her fifth career triple-double.

"Defense wins ballgames for you," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "I guess learned from two of the best. I learned from (Summitt) and (former Louisiana Tech coach) Leon Barmore, you better guard people. And these kids are going to guard you."

A rather ugly game for a purist's perspective got even uglier in the final 46.8 seconds.

Baylor's Odyssey Sims, who led the Bears with 27 points, tumbled to the floor, and she and Tennessee's Shekinna Stricklen had to be separated and were each assessed a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct.

No punches were thrown, but Griner and teammates Terran Condrey and Jordan Madden were ejected for leaving the bench. The NCAA says none of the players will be suspended for the Final Four.

"She just took it the wrong way. We had a little talking back and forth," Stricklen said about Sims. "I know Odyssey Sims. We played together on USA Basketball. I apologized after the game if she took it the wrong way. It's just not me. I'm not that type of person."

As for Summitt, she was given a standing ovation from Tennessee and Baylor fans alike when she came out roughly 15 minutes before tipoff. But as defeat became apparent, she sat silently on the bench with her legs crossed.

Summitt has 1,098 wins, more than any basketball coach in NCAA history, but these Lady Bears were too much for her Lady Vols.

"It's not fun for me to coach against Pat," Mulkey said. "I don't take great pleasure in that. But I have a job to do."

Like most of Baylor's games this season, the Bears regional semifinal was more about dominance than drama.

Baylor led 35-20 at halftime despite a poor start shooting from Griner. Tennessee made a spirited charge to start the second half, highlighted when Glory Johnson scored a second-chance bucket on Griner and simply smiled when Griner tossed her to the floor.

But the Bears are unbeaten because they're much more than Griner.

Sims followed a layup through traffic with a 3 that helped Bears go back ahead 49-38 with 11:12 to go. Tennessee made one final run, cutting a 19-point deficit to 64-53 with 4:48 left, but Griner finished off the Lady Vols with six points in the next minute.

"I thought we did a good job on Griner early, I thought we did a good job on Griner the whole game. The sign of a great team is other players step up and make shots and they did," Warlick said.

Stricklen had 22 points, but she needed 26 shots to get there. Johnson finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds for Tennessee, which had a habit of starting poorly.

But the Lady Vols were ready for this one ? at least for the first few minutes.

Tennessee double-teamed Griner with center Vicki Baugh and help defenders, and Griner hit just three of 10 shots in the first half. But the Lady Vols missed nine shots in a row after an early lead, and Baylor slowly built its edge to 26-16 on three straight buckets by Sims.

The Lady Vols hung close with Baylor in late November before losing 76-67. The rematch wasn't nearly as close, sending the Bears onto Denver and Tennessee grappling with the possibility that Summitt's career is over after 38 seasons and eight national titles.

"Obviously I would want Pat's health to be better. I think like Pat, this team never gave up and they never used it as a crutch for how they were playing and what they did this year," Warlick said.

Research: 'Buckliball' opens new avenue in design of foldable engineering structures

ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Motivated by the desire to determine the simplest 3-D structure that could take advantage of mechanical instability to collapse reversibly, a group of engineers at MIT and Harvard University were stymied -- until one of them happened across a collapsible, spherical toy that resembled the structures they'd been exploring, but with a complex layout of 26 solid moving elements and 48 rotating hinges.

The toy inspired the engineers to create the "buckliball," a hollow, spherical object made of soft rubber containing no moving parts, but fashioned with 24 carefully spaced dimples. When the air is sucked out of a buckliball with a syringe, the thin ligaments forming columns between lateral dimples collapse. This is the engineering equivalent of applying equal load on all beams in a structure simultaneously to induce buckling, a phenomenon first studied by mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1757.

When the buckliball's thin ligaments buckle, the thicker ligaments forming rows between dimples undergo a series of movements the researchers refer to as a "cooperative buckling cascade." Some of the thick ligaments rotate clockwise, others counterclockwise -- but all move simultaneously and harmoniously, turning the original circular dimples into vertical and horizontal ellipses in alternating patterns before closing them entirely. As a result, the buckliball morphs into a rhombicuboctahedron about half the size (46 percent) of the original sphere.

The researchers named their new structure for its use of buckling and its resemblance to buckyballs, spherical all-carbon molecules whose name was inspired by the geodesic domes created by architect-inventor Buckminster Fuller. The buckliball is the first morphable structure to incorporate buckling as a desirable engineering design element. The buckling process induces folding in portions of the sphere -- similar to the way paper folds in origami -- so the researchers place their buckliball in a larger framework of buckling-induced origami they call "buckligami."

Because their collapse is fully reversible and can be achieved without moving parts, morphable structures such as the buckliball have the potential for widespread applications, from the micro- to macroscale. They could be used to create large buildings with collapsible roofs or walls, tiny drug-delivery capsules or soft movable joints requiring no mechanical pieces. They also have the potential to transform Transformers and other kinds of toys. (The toy that provided the researchers' epiphany is the Hoberman Twist-O.)

The researchers -- Jongmin Shim MS '05, PhD '10, a postdoc at Harvard; Claude Perdigo, a visiting graduate student at MIT; Elizabeth Chen, a recent graduate of the University of Michigan who will join Harvard as a postdoc in the fall; Katia Bertoldi, an assistant professor in applied mechanics at Harvard; and Pedro Reis, the Esther and Harold E. Edgerton Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at MIT -- wrote a paper about this work that appears this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"In civil engineering, buckling is commonly associated with failure that must be avoided. For example, one typically wants to calculate the buckling criterion for columns and apply an additional safety factor, to ensure that a building stands," Reis says. "We are trying to change this paradigm by turning failure into functionality in soft mechanical structures. For us, the buckliball is the first such object, but there will be many others." For instance, a robotic arm could be built from a single piece of material using a precisely engineered pattern of dimples at the intended hinging points that, when activated by a pressure signal, would bend.

"The buckliball not only opens avenues for the design of foldable structures over a wide range of length scales, but may also be used as a building block for creating new materials with unusual properties, capable of dramatic contraction in all directions," Bertoldi says.

Reis's research uses precision tabletop-scale lab tests and mathematical analysis to determine the basic physics underlying the mechanical behavior of materials. Bertoldi's research group uses tools from continuum and computational mechanics to unravel the mechanics of soft structures. The two teams collaborated on the buckliball: Reis' team performed the lab experiments with the help of digital fabrication techniques (such as 3-D printing) to create objects with precise geometry, and Bertoldi's group used computation to further analyze the detailed mechanics of the process.

Chen, who was visiting Harvard at the time, determined that only five spherical geometric structures have the potential for reversible buckling-induced collapse. (The specific example of Fuller's 12-hole rhombicuboctahedron that collapses into a cuboctahedron is one of these five.) Design parameters for buckliballs include dimple size, the thickness of the thin shell inside the dimple and the stiffness of the material used to fabricate the buckliball.

Nature, it appears, has already figured this out. Viruses inject their nucleic acids into a host through a reversible structural transformation in which 60 holes open or close based on changes in the acidity of the cell's environment, a different mechanism that achieves a similar reversible collapse at the nanoscale.

"What's exciting about this work is that it uses instabilities to basically amplify small or moderate pressures into dramatic motion," says Carmel Majidi, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University whose research in soft robotics focuses on stretchable skin-like materials containing sensors. "One limitation of working with soft-material robotics is that they're soft; they can't produce the high pressures you get with heavy machines, so you're left with machines that provide only fairly moderate pressures. This makes it difficult to achieve dramatic deformations. If you use a robotic skin as an assistive medical device on a human, it can monitor motion. But with advancements like the buckliball, the skin may even be able to actively change its shape and directly help with motor tasks."

The work was funded through a National Science Foundation grant to the Harvard Materials Research Science and Engineering Center and by funds from Harvard University and MIT.

6 kids, 2 adults killed in W.Va. house fire

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? Authorities in West Virginia say a fire broke out at a two-story wood frame home, killing six children and two adults. A woman and a baby also were hurt.

Bob Sharp, assistant chief for the Charleston Fire Department, tells WSAZ-TV that all the children are younger than 8.

It was not immediately clear how the blaze started early Saturday morning at the two-story, wood-frame home.

WCHS-TV says fire officials believe all those who died lived in the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dairy cows have individual temperaments

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? From a young age, dairy cows react differently from each other to stimuli from their surroundings. An animal's temperament determines how it reacts in stressful situations, but may also influence its general health. In the future, temperament could be bred as a selective trait to improve the robustness and wellbeing of dairy cows.

This is the conclusion reached by zootechnician Kees van Reenen, who will receive a PhD from the University of Groningen on 30 March 2012.

Van Reenen studied black-and-white Holstein-Friesian cows as they developed from calf to cow. He carried out behavioural tests and physiological examinations in order to determine how the animals react to external stimuli. He focused on the following, among others: fear responses, lowing (vocalization), stamping, pulse and the release of cortisol as the external characteristics of underlying traits -- including timidity, the need for social contact and movement -- that, taken together, determine the temperament.

Jerry can

In order to study the differences in the reactions, Van Reenen subjected the animals to potentially stressful situations, namely securing them with a halter for a short period, separating them from the rest of the herd, and confronting them with a person or unfamiliar object. The unfamiliar object he used was a jerry can. 'In this test, the calf or cow enters an empty room in which, after a few minutes, a coloured jerry can appears using a pulley', Van Reenen explains. The differences between the animals' responses were very clear: some of them made contact with the jerry can after just a few seconds, while others didn't dare to approach it at all during the ten-minute test.'

Anxiolytic drug

Van Reenen was also able to measure the fear response physiologically: the animals that investigated the jerry can thoroughly and for the longest time had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood than the animals that were more cautious. In order to prove that the caution was indeed a fear response, Van Reenen administered an anxiolytic drug (Brotizolam) to the animals. Van Reenen: 'The length of contact with the jerry can increased considerably in the animals that had been given an anti-anxiety drug, and the cortisol levels fell more quickly after the test.

Lowing

Although lowing could be easily interpreted as a fear response in the first instance, this was not the case. Van Reenen: 'The frequency of the lowing did not change when the Brotizolam was administered. Apart from that, calves that lowed a great deal when separated from others in the herd had a higher milk yield when they were milked for the first time later, as heifers, than the animals that were less vocal. Therefore, lowing is not a fear response, but probably a form of social behaviour: a sign that they like to be near other cows. Animals that exhibit this behaviour could benefit from social contact with other animals in stressful situations -- when they are being milked, for example.

Robustness

Notably, the differences in temperament in individual animals proved consistent throughout the research period. Van Reenen: 'This shows that temperament is a stable underlying trait in the animal. We know from research into other species, such as coal tits and rats, that temperament can influence an animal's health and wellbeing. If that also applies to dairy cows, temperament could be bred as a selective trait to produce robust animals, in the same way as traits such as good bone structure, fertility and low susceptibility to mastitis.'
