The arctic ice cap is melting at a rapid rate and may shrink to its lowest-ever level within weeks as temperatures continue to rise. Al Jazeera's Nick Clark joined an expedition travelling deep into the Arctic Circle to Qaanaaq, in Greenland.

"It used to be?the Arctic ice cover?was like a big block of ice," said Walt Meier, a research scientist with the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) during a press conference held after the new record low was set on Sunday (Aug. 26). "Now it's become crushed ice and that is a lot easier to melt and melt more quickly. Parts of the Arctic have become like a giant slushie. [That] makes them more vulnerable to these types of storms."

The storm persisted over the central Arctic Ocean for several days, bringing warm and very windy conditions to the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas, followed by low temperatures. Strong wind and wave action from storms like this can increase melt by breaking up ice, according to a NSIDC report following the storm.

On Sunday (Aug. 26), Arctic sea-ice extent fell to a new record: 1.58 million square miles (4.10 million square kilometers), surpassing the previous low, 1.61 square miles (4.17 square kilometers) set on Sept. 18, 2007, the NSIDC reported. [10 Things to Know About Sea Ice]

Sea-ice watchers?saw this coming, at least to some degree.

"As early as maybe July we were able to project that the 2012 ice cover will likely be similar to 2007, but then in August, when we have this storm, the values for 2012 started to go down lower," said Josefino Comiso, a sea ice researcher with NASA.

Sea-ice extent describes the area of ocean?covered at least 15 percent by sea ice?as measured by satellite instruments. Continuous satellite measurements of sea-ice extent date back to the late 1970s.

Sea-ice extent grows and retreats with the season every year. While there are significant fluctuations in this cycle from year to year, by the late 1990s satellite measurements indicated there was a strong downward trend in sea-ice extent, said Claire Parkinson a climatologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

By the end of the 1990s, submarine data showed the ice was thinning as well, Parkinson said.

The old ice, which survives year after year and maintains thicknesses of 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters), has been disappearing from the Arctic waters, Meier said. Now, Arctic sea ice has become thinner and is more easily melted or pushed around by storms, he said. "The Arctic Ocean is really a different place than it used to be," he said.

The loss of Arctic sea ice has serious implications for the animals ??polar bears?and walruses ? that use it as habitat.

Summer weather could mean fall colors pop in Northeast U.S.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The summer's dry weather, combined with recent cool nights, could combine for a colorful fall foliage season in the Northeast, U.S..

"Right now, without knowing what's going to happen in the middle of October when the fall colors start to peak regionally, it looks like it's going to be a good year for fall colors," said Dr. Donald J. Leopold, a dendrologist and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Fall colors depend largely on weather conditions that occur closer to the peak foliage season, Leopold noted, but early indications are that 2012 could feature a bright fall.

A combination of factors affect fall color, including the amount of rainfall a region receives, the number of sunny days and nighttime temperatures, with cooler temperatures boosting colors. Recent lows in Central New York, where ESF is located, have dipped into the 50s.

Although homeowners might see the plants in their landscaping, particularly trees that were planted recently, suffer effects of the regional drought this summer, Leopold said plants in natural settings are less likely to be affected by dry weather.

Ofcom approves Everything Everywhere's early 4G plans, starting next month (update)

While Brits still languish at the back of the queue for LTE, there is at least a sliver of hope that regulator Ofcom is moving forward with plans for 4G provision. It's announced today that carrier Everything Everywhere (the combined network of Orange and T-Mobile) will be allowed to use its 1800 MHz spectrum to push out next-generation phone services. Ofcom decided that the change to the UK network's license would deliver "significant benefits to consumers, and that there is no material risk that those benefits will be outweighed by a distortion of competition." Auctions for additional 800 and 2.6 GHz bands are still on track to happen later this year, aiming for a roll-out through 2013. Everything Everywhere will be allowed to use LTE and (bizarrely) WiMAX starting 11 September 2012, although this may not be the launch date for any commercial service -- which could be unfortunate. The UK's comms regulator goes into the specifics after the break.

Update: Vodafone UK has issued a statement regarding the decision (hint: it's not happy), which can be read in full after the break.

New method to remove phosphorus from wastewater

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? A professor at Michigan State University is part of a team developing a new method of removing phosphorus from wastewater -- a problem seriously affecting lakes and streams across the United States.

In addition, Steven Safferman, an associate professor of biosystems and agricultural engineering, and colleagues at Columbus, Ohio, based-MetaMateria Technologies, are devising a cost-effective way of recovering the phosphorus, which then can be reused for fertilizer products.

Although its use is regulated in many states, including Michigan, in items such as detergents and fertilizer, phosphorus is part of all food and remains a critical problem as it is always present in human and animal wastes.

Discharge from human and industrial wastewater and runoff into lakes and streams can cause what is known as eutrophication -- making the water unsuitable for recreational purposes and reducing fish populations -- as well as causing the growth of toxic algae.

What MetaMateria Technologies and Safferman have figured out and tested over the past 10 years is how to produce a media, enhanced with nanoparticles composed of iron, that can more efficiently remove larger amounts of phosphorus from water.

"Phosphorus that is dissolved in wastewater, like sugar in water, is hard to remove," Safferman said. "We found that a nano-media made with waste iron can efficiently absorb it, making it a solid that can be easily and efficiently removed and recovered for beneficial reuse."

Safferman added there are indications that their method of phosphorus retrieval is much more cost effective than processing phosphate rock.

"Research suggests that it is significantly cheaper to recover phosphorus this way. So why would you mine phosphorus?" he asked. "And, at the same time, you're helping to solve a serious environmental problem."

The material should be commercially available for use within two years, said J. Richard Schorr, MetaMateria CEO.

"Phosphorus is a finite material," Schorr said "Analyses show that the supply of phosphorus may become limited within the next 25 to 50 years. This is an economical way to harvest and recycle phosphorus."

This research is funded, in part, by a National Science Foundation Small Business Innovative Research Grant.

While the wisest thing to do when dealing with credit card debt, or any other debts, is to pay on time and never overextend it, some people really do not have the option or the luxury to do so. When money is tight and creditors are calling you from every corner, some debts are bound to be left unpaid. The usual policy of the creditors when a debtor has not been paid from 180 days to 240 days is to charge off the debt. No, this does not mean that the debt has been cancelled or that the debtor no longer has to repay it. It simply means that the creditor has moved that debt account to a bad debt account. The creditor still has the right to collect the debt from you while some other creditors might sell that account to a collection agency at a discount rate.

If in any case your creditor or the collection agency calls you up for collection, the first thing you need to know is your rights. In the United States, the creditors or debt collectors are bound by the state?s Statute of Limitations. This law sets forth a maximum time after which a creditor or debt collector can no longer recover the debt from you, the debtor. The laws of the statute vary in each state so you may like to find out the limitations for your state. If a creditor demands payment or files a lawsuit after the allowed time, you can raise the issue of expired statute limitations. However, be reminded that you are usually required to raise the issue in written response to the collection demand or lawsuit. The court will then likely dismiss the case and disallow the creditor to file suit again. This also means that you are, legally, not bound to the old debt anymore. Aside from the statute, a creditor or debt collector is also bound by the contract between you and your original creditor. So if the initial contract did not stipulate interest charges but the current collector demands full payment plus interest, you have no obligations to agree to it. With the average person having at least two credit cards nowadays, it is difficult to remember the terms of your old credit card debts, or your old debts outstanding if any. This is why you are advised to ask for debt validation when the collector demands payment. In the time between the notifications for a debt validation till the time it is presented to you, the collector has to cease collection from you. If the collector fails to present the debt validation, then the account becomes non-collectable and he has no right to collect from you anymore. Be sure that you are presented with proper validation, that is the account statements from the original creditor which includes payment history from the very beginning as well as the copy of the loan or credit card application.

These are some means to protect yourself against old debts when they come knocking on your door. But what if they are current debts and you are unable to pay them off? The solution can come in form of credit card debt consolidation. This means merging your various credit debts into one new repayment plan; your various monthly payments will be lumped into new payment plan. This is often an advisable alternative for paying credit card debts. It will usually result in easier repayment and lower interest rate too. Sometimes a consolidation involves a secured loan against an asset, like your house, as collateral. But it isn?t always necessary to mortgage you home though ? personal loan or unsecured loan is sufficient for consolidation, although it may come with a higher interest rate as compared to a secured loan.

Tens of thousands gather for peace rally in Mali

Up to 60,000 people gathered Sunday for a giant peace rally in Mali, a country split in two after Islamists wrested control of northern desert regions after a March coup in the capital Bamako.

The meeting for "national peace and reconciliation" in Bamako's main stadium was called by the country's top Muslim body and drew several key politicians including Prime Minister Cheikh Modibo Diarra.

"Let us pray for Mali, let us pray for peace," urged Mahmoud Dicko, the head of Mali's High Islamic Council, as he addressed a crowd that an AFP reporter estimated at between 50,000 and 60,000.

Dicko recently met with the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), one of two Islamist groups, along with Ansar Dine (Defenders of Faith), occupying the north of the country.

The groups -- which security experts say are acting under the aegis of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) -- seized key northern cities in the chaos following a coup d'etat in Bamako on March 22 that toppled president Amadou Toumani Toure.

The takeover was spearheaded by Tuareg rebels seeking an independent state for their nomadic desert tribe, but the extremists have pushed them aside and seek an Islamic state in the zone, an area larger than France or Texas.

The groups have since imposed strict Islamic law on the population in northern Mali, prompting outrage as they stoned an unmarried couple to death last month and cut off the hand of a thief on Wednesday.

Fighters from Ansar Dine also destroyed part of Timbuktu's cultural treasures -- declaring the ancient Muslim shrines "haram" or forbidden in Islam -- shortly after UNESCO placed them on a list of endangered World Heritage sites.

"Our country needs peace and national healing," said Madani Ousmane Haidara, a prominent imam, at the rally.

"It's up to Malians to find a solution and I ask all Malians to forgive each other," Haidara said.

In Bamako, interim authorities who took over from the junta have stood by helplessly as Islamists have tightened their hold in the north, and are now working to form a stronger unity government on the orders of west African mediators.

The ECOWAS west African regional bloc has 3,300 troops ready to deploy in Mali.

The UN Security Council is ready to approve this, but is awaiting a formal request from Bamako as well as more information on the size, means and mandate of the proposed force.

Todman, an urban planner, is the principal investigator behind a new report that establishes a Mental Health Impact Assessment for her field. To be presented at a conference in Chicago next month called ?The Social Determinants of Urban Mental Health,? the MHIA will codify ways that cities can build for happier, mentally healthier residents.

For years, cities have conducted Health Impact Assessments (minus the ?Mental?) to make sure developments and infrastructure decisions don?t harm residents? physical health. ?But almost never something like depression or ADHD,? says Todman. Which is odd, when you think about how much energy is expended correcting mental health problems, and how those problems come back to haunt cities.

Viacom 3Q profit down 7 pct on TV ad decline

NEW YORK (AP) ? Viacom Inc., the owner of Paramount Pictures, MTV and Nickelodeon, on Friday said its net income fell 7 percent in the latest quarter as advertising revenue declined more than expected and its movie releases failed to measure up to last year's.

The results missed Wall Street estimates, and Viacom shares fell $1.83, or 4 percent, to $44 in premarket trading, below the level touched during the regular trading day this year.

Viacom earned $534 million, or $1.01 per share, in the April to June quarter. That compares with $574 million, or 97 cents per share, in the same period last year.

Excluding some one-time tax benefits, earnings were 97 cents per share in the fiscal third quarter, 3 cents below the average analyst estimate as polled by FactSet.

The New York-based company's revenue fell 14 percent to $3.24 billion, 7 percent below analysts' estimate of $3.49 billion.

Revenue fell 5 percent at Viacom's TV networks as U.S. advertising fell 7 percent. Viacom has been struggling with a ratings decline for key channels, particularly Nickelodeon. It says it's investing aggressively to create new hits. TV accounts for two-thirds of Viacom's overall revenue and nearly all of the profits.

Revenue dropped 29 percent at Paramount, which released three films in the quarter: "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," ''The Dictator" and "Titanic 3D." In the same quarter last year, it had four blockbusters: "Kung Fu Panda 2," ''Thor," ''Super 8" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

RIM says has not compromised BlackBerry security in India

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research in Motion refuted on Wednesday a new round of Indian media reports, which claim that the BlackBerry maker has granted the Indian government the encryption keys to its secure corporate email and messaging services.

India is one of the Canadian smartphone maker's few growing markets, where it is expanding aggressively. The company is facing falling sales elsewhere as customers abandon the BlackBerry in favor of Apple's iPhone and a slew of devices using Google Inc's Android software, leading to RIM's shares falling by more than 50 percent over the past one year.

RIM, which has been grappling with the Indian government for years, reiterated that it cannot provide access to its enterprise email and messaging services as the company itself does not possess the encryption keys for the same and these remain in the control of its corporate clients.

The Economic Times, in a report on its website that cited a telecom department official and certain documents reviewed, said that RIM had provided the Indian government a solution that gave it access to corporate emails.

RIM categorically denied this claim in a statement. It has more than once refuted similar claims in India over the last two years.

"RIM is providing an appropriate lawful access solution that enables India's telecom operators to be legally compliant with respect to their BlackBerry consumer traffic, to the same degree as other smartphone providers in India, but this does not extend to secure BlackBerry enterprise communications," said Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM in a statement.

RIM gave India access to its consumer services, including its Messenger services, in January last year after authorities raised security concerns, but said it could not allow monitoring of its enterprise email.

The Indian government is fearful that encrypted BlackBerry services could be used to foster unrest or allow militants to organize or carry out attacks.

'SECURE AND ENCRYPTED'

David Paterson, RIM's head of government relations, said he is positive that the Indian government recognizes encryption is fundamental to attracting and maintaining international business in the country and that it would not make any demands that could jeopardize foreign investment in India.

"The fact is that BlackBerry enterprise communications in India remain secure and encrypted. No change has been made or ever can be made in India or anywhere," he said in an interview.

RIM has also faced similar political pressures in the Middle East and elsewhere. It also blocked pornographic sites on its browsers in Indonesia last year following government pressure.

Enterprise clients -- corporations and government agencies signed up to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server -- are assigned encryption keys stored only on individual user accounts. For such users, any data sent from a BlackBerry is scrambled at the source and reconstituted on arrival at the receiving device.

RIM has long maintained that only the sponsoring business or organization has the technical capability to grant access to encrypted enterprise email.
