Spa Week Provides Affordable, Lifelong Wellness for Body and Mind ...

Moving into its 17th installation, Spa Week?s Fall 2012 Event will take place from October 15th ? 21st when hundreds of spas (day, medical and resort), yoga and Pilates studios, fitness and nutrition centers, and other health and wellness practices nationwide will offer up to three signature treatments at the major discount of just each. Spas and wellness facilities have become invested in improving overall health and well-being for consumers, rather than serving as only a brief escape from their hectic lifestyle.

In a fast paced society where deadlines, demands and frustrations seem to be the norm, stress has become so commonplace that it is practically a way of life for so many people. Unfortunately, this constant strain on body and mind can lead to serious health consequences. Study after study shows that there is a strong link between stress and overall health, and it?s no wonder that by 2020, the top five diseases will all share a contributing factor of stress according to the World Health Organization.

In 2004, Spa Week recognized the epidemic of stress-related health issues and set out to change the dangerous course the country had charted. The first step was making it possible for everyone to experience the healing benefits of spa and wellness services, thus the biannual Spa Week Events and their affordable treatments were created. Since then, Spa Week has implemented many other groundbreaking programs devoted to educating consumers about the preventative and life-long wellness benefits of spa visits.

In alignment with this commitment to enrich consumer?s lives, the Fall 2012 Event will offer a wide variety of services that address the most vital health concerns including stress and pain management, weight loss and maintenance, mind-body balance and total fitness.

Such services will incorporate holistic and alternative therapies such as traditional, ancient medicine like acupuncture and cupping to Ayurveda, one of the most popular healing therapies today. In addition to these nurturing treatments for body and mind, consumers can also expect to see serious technology and innovation on the Spa Week menu. From colon hydrotherapy and non-invasive body contouring to stimulate weight loss, to advanced laser facials that go above and beyond tackling basic skincare concerns by helping to prevent and even treat skin cancer. The wellness possibilities are endless, and when it comes to personal health, Spa Week is a sure reason for consumers to make that once out of reach ?me? time an affordable reality.

In order to receive exclusive information on spa and wellness locations and their services, spa-goers should register on SpaWeek.com as early as possible. The complete directory will launch five weeks early, on September 10th, to allow consumers to begin booking their most desired services. It is recommended that spa-goers sign up and book in advance on SpaWeek.com to ensure they reserve their top treatment choices.

Spa visits improve overall health in many ways, from the physical to psychological, but perhaps the most important is that they provide the tools for long-term prevention. Investing in personal health and well-being now decreases the chance of battling stress-related illness in the future. As more consumers turn to spas and wellness facilities to aid in their physical and mental health goals, Spa Week is there and will continue in its tradition of assisting millions in their journey of living a life of greater health, happiness and well-being.

Spa Week was created and founded by Cheryl Reid, who hails from successful careers within the luxury spa industry and publishing spheres. Joining Spa Week for the Fall 2012 Event, sponsors include Exclusive National Media Sponsor: Health magazine; Exclusive Destination Sponsor: Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism; Exclusive Trade Association Partner: ISPA; Exclusive Skincare Sponsor: American Laser Skincare; Exclusive Hair Care Sponsor: Ouidad and Exclusive Water Sponsor: Dream Water. Civil war keeps many Syrian children from school

Many schools have been destroyed or are home to refugees. Some parents are simply too afraid to send their children to school due over fears of violence. (AP Photo/Muhammed Muheisen)

(AP) ? Nine-year-old Rawan Mustafa knew she would miss school this year.

Her primary school is in ruins, blown apart two months ago by an airstrike in rebel-controlled northern Syria.

"I come here to find books to take them home and read ? my sister helps me," Rawan said Sunday, picking her way through the rubble of shattered walls, half-burned work books and smashed glass.

Sunday was the official first day of school in Syria, a country of 23 million people, but the country's agonizing civil war is keeping thousands of students like Rawan out of classrooms nationwide.

Many schools have been destroyed or occupied by refugees. Some parents are simply too afraid to send their children to school due over fears of violence. Still others are living in refugee camps outside the country with only limited access to an education.

The U.N. children's agency says it is difficult to know precisely how many Syrian children have been out of school for an extended period due to the conflict, which started 18 months ago and has killed at least 23,000 people.

Dina Craissati, UNICEF's regional education adviser, said at least 200,000 Syrian children who have been displaced from their homes within the country are having difficulty accessing education. Outside Syria's borders, the U.N. has registered more than 250,000 refugees ? including children ? but tens of thousands more have fled to Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq without registering.

Some 2,000 schools have been damaged in the conflict and 759 are being used as sanctuaries for those displaced, Syrian Education Minister Hazwan al-Wazz said. Still, the government says 22,000 schools are operating and handling any overflow by having students attend classes in shifts.

The government said more than 5 million students attended school on Sunday.

Mohammed Rakani, a 10-year-old from the Damascus suburb of Sbeineh, was not among them. He is staying with his family at the Somayya al-Makhzomiya School in Damascus, which is sheltering more 300 people, or 65 families.

"I want to return to my school, which I love so much. I am now in the fourth grade," Mohammed said during a government-escorted trip to the school on Sunday.

In the north, where the opposition wields much more control, rebel officials say they are too focused on getting enough food and medical supplies into the country to concentrate on schools. There are also fears that any makeshift schools set up may attract airstrikes.

"Our main focus is food, shelter and medical care right now," said Seif al-Haq, a rebel with the Tawhid Brigade that is responsible for civilian affairs in the northern city of Aleppo and the surrounding countryside.

"No schools are running in the liberated areas of Aleppo, they were all destroyed, but we are trying to run makeshift classes underground, like English or computers. Of course we're still afraid they'll get hit," he said.

Abu Ahmed, a high school physics teacher in Tel Rifaat, said some had contemplated holding private classes but feared they would be hit by the airstrikes that hit the area on a daily basis.

"They target anywhere where people gather," he said, asking his real name not be used because as a civil servant, he is still receiving his government salary.

Another problem is that many teachers have joined the hundreds of thousands of Syrians who have fled the province.

Standing amid the ruins of the school, Mohammed Ibrahim, 13, said his Arabic teacher Abdel-Razaq was his favorite because he never got angry. But Abdel-Razaq was gone now, along with half of Mohammed's friends.

"It makes me sad that they are not here," said Ibrahim, whose favorite subject is math because he said it makes his brain work. "It's boring without them."

Even in villages considered "safe," that aren't subject to daily bombings, schools aren't opening, often because they are filled with refugees.

In the town of Souran, the newly built school is still in perfect condition, but each classroom is now filled with a different extended family who sleep side by side on the floor on thin mattresses.

Refugees from the fighting in Aleppo, they came here months ago and moved all the desks out into the sun-splashed courtyard so that they could settle in the classrooms.

The displaced acknowledged, though, that local residents had been urging them to leave and head for the refugee camps on the border so that the school could return to its original use.

It's not clear why so many schools have been hit in the fighting. In some cases rebels have apparently used the facilities, as may have been the case in Tel Rifaat where one classroom had some tattered military fatigues on the floor.

Residents in Kal Jibreen, however, say that wasn't the case with their school, which on Saturday afternoon was nearly hit by a missile that tore the facade off the house across from it.

A few weeks ago, rockets put a hole in the school roof and smashed most of its windows, according to residents.

"Today we should all be in school, but we can't go because of the planes," said Dargham Yassin, a bespectacled little boy who like many Syrian children looks much younger than his 12 years. Without school, he's not sure how he will fill his days.

"I'll do nothing," he said. "I'll go feed the sheep."

Syrians who have escaped their country also lack access to education.

At the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan ? which is fast becoming known as "the children's camp" ? two-thirds of the 30,000 Syrian refugees are under 18, while 5,000 are 4 and younger. On a recent day, the children filled plastic bottles with drinking water at pumps or played on swings and slides; others scampered aimlessly about.

Save the Children and UNICEF believe part of the healing process for the camp's children will mean going back to school.

But Jordanian officials have said that may not happen until October at the earliest, after promised funding is made available by the government of Bahrain. UNICEF wants a school for the camp's children to open much sooner.

"We really need to ensure that children regain some sense of normalcy. They have been through horrific times and have seen extreme violence," said Dominique Hyde, UNICEF's representative to Jordan. "They need as soon as possible not only to come back to education but also to some sort of routine and stability. School provides one of the best ways."

Lamborghini Recall: 1,500 Gallardo Coupe and Spyder Models At Risk Of Fire

DETROIT -- Italian sports car maker Lamborghini is recalling some Gallardo models because power steering fluid can leak and catch fire.

The recall affects about 1,500 Gallardo Coupe and Spyder autos, from model years 2004 to 2006. The cars start at about $200,000.

Lamborghini says in documents sent to U.S. safety regulators that pipes can corrode near the power steering pump. In rare cases, fluid can leak onto the hot engine and cause a fire. The company says it discovered the problem in product monitoring and testing. No fires or injuries have been reported.

The cars were built from May of 2003 through April of 2008.

Owners will be notified this month. Dealers will update the power steering system free of charge.

Extreme Life Forms Might be Able to Survive on Eccentric Exoplanets

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? Astronomers have discovered a veritable rogues' gallery of odd exoplanets -- from scorching hot worlds with molten surfaces to frigid ice balls.

And while the hunt continues for the elusive "blue dot" -- a planet with roughly the same characteristics as Earth -- new research reveals that life might actually be able to survive on some of the many exoplanetary oddballs that exist.

"When we're talking about a habitable planet, we're talking about a world where liquid water can exist," said Stephen Kane, a scientist with the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "A planet needs to be the right distance from its star -- not too hot and not too cold." Determined by the size and heat of the star, this temperature range is commonly referred to as the "habitable zone" around a star.

Kane and fellow Exoplanet Science Institute scientist Dawn Gelino have created a resource called the "Habitable Zone Gallery." It calculates the size and distance of the habitable zone for each exoplanetary system that has been discovered and shows which exoplanets orbit in this so-called "goldilocks" zone. The Habitable Zone Gallery can be found at www.hzgallery.org . The study describing the research appears in the Astrobiology journal and is available at http://arxiv.org/abs/1205.2429 .

But not all exoplanets have Earth-like orbits that remain at a fairly constant distance from their stars. One of the unexpected revelations of planet hunting has been that many planets travel in very oblong, eccentric orbits that vary greatly in distance from their stars.

"Planets like these may spend some, but not all of their time in the habitable zone," Kane said. "You might have a world that heats up for brief periods in between long, cold winters, or you might have brief spikes of very hot conditions."

Though planets like these would be very different from Earth, this might not preclude them from being able to support alien life. "Scientists have found microscopic life forms on Earth that can survive all kinds of extreme conditions," Kane said. "Some organisms can basically drop their metabolism to zero to survive very long-lasting, cold conditions. We know that others can withstand very extreme heat conditions if they have a protective layer of rock or water. There have even been studies performed on Earth-based spores, bacteria and lichens, which show they can survive in both harsh environments on Earth and the extreme conditions of space."

Kane and Gelino's research suggests that habitable zone around stars might be larger than once thought, and that planets that might be hostile to human life might be the perfect place for extremophiles, like lichens and bacteria, to survive. "Life evolved on Earth at a very early stage in the planet's development, under conditions much harsher than they are today," Kane said.

Kane explained that many life-harboring worlds might not be planets at all, but rather moons of larger, gas-giant planets like Jupiter in our own solar system. "There are lots of giant planets out there, and all of them may have moons, if they are like the giant planets in the solar system," Kane says. "A moon of a planet that is in or spends time in a habitable zone can be habitable itself."

As an example, Kane mentioned Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, which, despite its thick atmosphere, is far too distant from the sun and too cold for life as we know it to exist on its surface. "If you moved Titan closer in to the sun, it would have lots of water vapor and very favorable conditions for life."

Kane is quick to point out that there are limits to what scientists can presently determine about habitability on already-discovered exoplanets. "It's difficult to really know about a planet when you don't have any knowledge about its atmosphere," he said. For example, both Earth and Venus experience an atmospheric "greenhouse effect" -- but the runaway effect on Venus makes it the hottest place in the solar system. "Without analogues in our own solar system, it's difficult to know precisely what a habitable moon or eccentric planet orbit would look like."

Still, the research suggests that habitability might exist in many forms in the galaxy -- not just on planets that look like our own. Kane and Gelino are hard at work determining which already-discovered exoplanets might be candidates for extremophile life or habitable moons. "There are lots of eccentric and gas giant planet discoveries," Kane says. "We may find some surprises out there as we start to determine exactly what we consider habitable."

Whales & Sharks from Above: A Fish Spotter's Amazing Tale

Wayne Davis has been spotting fish for 40 years, flying his airplane low over the water in search of bluefin tuna and swordfish. Usually he guides commercial fishermen to them.

But in all of his flights over the Atlantic from his home in Wakefield, R.I., he's seen a lot of other animals, including sharks and whales. And he's taken photographs.

"A lot of people don't believe me when I tell them about seeing these animals in New England," Davis said. The photographs are proof.

Having worked with fishermen since purchasing his single-engine Citabria airplane in 1973, he recently tired of chasing fish. So he has strayed even farther from shore to find whale sharks, hammerheads, great white sharks, basking sharks, humpback whales, mobula rays and other giants of the deep.

He's partnered with underwater cinematographers and researchers to help them film and study these amazing animals. [Images: Sharks & Whales from Above]

Hammerhead close encounter

Two weeks ago, on Aug. 22, Davis helped underwater cinematographers Tom Burns and Eric Savetsky find a school of about 20 hammerhead sharks above Oceanographer's Canyon, 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of Nantucket, Mass. Davis saw the sharks from his plane and radioed their position to Burns and Savetsky. They piloted their boat toward the sharks and hopped into the water.

After failing at first to get close to the scalloped hammerheads, which are usually pretty shy, the school approached and surrounded the duo, Savetsky told OurAmazingPlanet. "It was fantastic from a visual experience, but a little unnerving because they were acting bolder than I typically know them to be," he said. But they didn't get too close, and swam off after a couple passes.

"It was an amazing experience, to swim among them, that never would have been possible without Wayne," Burns said.

At some point, Savetsky took his eye off the camera to gauge his surroundings. "When I looked up, there was a 500-pound [230 kilograms] tiger shark about 10 feet [3 meters] away, and I actually screamed into my snorkel," he said.

Savetsky put his camera in front of him not only to film the animal but to protect himself, since tiger sharks can occasionally become aggressive toward swimmers on the surface. Luckily it seemed merely to be curious, and it soon disappeared into the deep. ?

Finding great whites

Davis has also worked with Greg Skomal, a scientist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, helping Skomal find great white sharks and other animals. On Aug. 27, 2010, off the coast of Chatham, Mass., Davis helped guide Skomal and other researchers to the carcass of a dead humpback whale, which was being circled by a great white.

The researchers tied the humpback whale to the boat and put down a cage to observe the shark up close. This also allowed them to tag the animal, to find out where it spends its time. Sharks are often found near dead whales, which they feed upon.

Davis grew up in New England and was always interested in flying. After serving in Vietnam, he decided to become a spotter pilot and bought his own plane. For 25 years he did hard labor as a deckhand on commercial vessels and worked a fish-spotter in the offseason. Now he just flies.

Skomal said Davis' expertise is invaluable in finding and correctly identifying animals, as is his ability to photograph what he sees. Sometimes Davis will tell Skomal if he finds anything interesting, and other times Skomal will hire Davis to locate animals.

Davis' photographs allow Skomal to know what animals show up where, but they also give an idea of the animals' size and condition. The photograph of the great white, for example, tells Skomal the animal is about 18 feet (5 m) long, as it's half the size of the 35-foot (11 m) boat. The animals are known to reach about 22 feet (6.7 m) in length.

"That was a big one," Skomal said.

Vacation done, Wall Street gears back up

CNBC's Sue Herera looks ahead to what are likely to be next week's top business and financial stories.

By Angela Moon, Reuters

NEW YORK -- Marking the end of the summer doldrums, Wall Street is likely to kick off September with heavy trading volume while it hopes that the European Central Bank will hint at further stimulus measures to boost the global economy.

On Friday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said that the central bank stands ready to bolster the economy if necessary, although he stopped short of giving an explicit signal of more monetary easing.

Stocks rallied after Bernanke's speech to an annual conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with major indexes gaining more than 1 percent in the late morning session. At the end of the day the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.7 percent, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index?was up 0.51 percent and the Nasdaq Composite Index up 0.6 percent.

"This (Bernanke speech) was in line with what we were expecting. He left the door open but didn't announce anything explicit. He doesn't intend to front-run his own FOMC (policy)?meeting," said Liz Ann Sonders, New York-based chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab Corp, which has $1.6 trillion in client assets.

Investors are now awaiting comments from European Central Bank President Mario Draghi after the bank's meeting on Thursday. Many investors will look to the ECB meeting to glean strong clues on what to expect from the Federal Open Market Committee's own policy meeting the following week on Sept 12-13.

"Between now and mid-September, we'll be focusing on the ECB, though the next FOMC meeting is also around the time that the German court meets, so we'll be getting news on both those fronts. Any news from Europe will drive markets more than domestic news, with the exception of the payroll report," Sonders said.

The all-important U.S. non-farm payrolls report is due on Friday. With Bernanke citing poor improvement in the labor market as part of the reason the U.S. economy faces "daunting" challenges, Friday's data could be a game changer, according to market participants.

In the euro zone, following the European Central Bank policy meeting on September 6, a German Constitutional Court will rule on the euro zone's permanent bailout fund on September 12, which may affect the ECB's bond-buying plans.

But there was further uncertainty within the ECB over President Mario Draghi's bond-buying plan on Friday after German central bank chief Jens Weidmann reportedly threatened to resign, piling pressure on Draghi to mollify opposition.

There are "growing hopes that Draghi has overcome Bundesbank opposition to announce a bond buying plan at next Thursday's ECB meeting," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co.

But "what Draghi may have put in front of Weidmann is the notion that no actual purchases may ever occur as long as the market understands what it is up against in terms of coordinated, decisive policy response from the ECB."

In a holiday shortened week, with U.S. markets closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday, Friday's employment report will be the final major economic report to impact the results of the upcoming FOMC meeting.

"Unless there is a sharp weakening in the labor markets, something our data do not indicate, the Fed will sit on the sidelines at the ready to act only if things get really bad," said Steve Blitz, Chief Economist at ITG Investment Research in New York.

A Reuters survey forecast nonfarm payrolls rose by 125,000 for the month of August.

In July, nonfarm payrolls added 163,000 workers, breaking three months of job gains below 100,000 and offering hope for the ailing economy. At the same time, a rise in the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent kept alive the possibility that the Federal Reserve could provide additional stimulus to the economy.

"The Beige Book prepared for the September 12-13 meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) offered little evidence of a material improvement in broad labor market conditions through Aug 20," Wilkinson said.

"Indeed, the trend in jobless claims has largely moved sideways over the summer. We forecast that total nonfarm payrolls increased by 110,000 in August, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 8.3 percent," he said.

Other economic data next week include the Institute for Supply Management manufacturing survey and construction spending on Tuesday; non-farm productivity and labor costs on Wednesday; the ADP private-sector employment report and weekly jobless claims on Thursday.

For the week the Dow was down 0.5 percent, while the S&P 500 was down 0.3 percent and the Nasdaq was down 0.1 percent. For the month, the Dow rose 0.6 percent, the S&P 500 gained 2 percent and the Nasdaq climbed 4.3 percent, its best monthly performance since February.

Dozens feared dead in Guinea boat accident

CONAKRY (Reuters) - At least eight people were confirmed to have drowned and dozens more were feared dead after a boat carrying about 45 passengers capsized off the Guinean capital Conakry on Friday evening, authorities said.

"We do not know yet the total number of deaths, but of the more than 45 passengers on board, there have been only a few survivors," said port official Fanyewa Soumah.

The motorized wooden boat was ferrying passengers from Conakry to an island off the West African coast. Soumah said it was not clear why it had capsized.

Mohamed Awada, director of a hospital in Conakry, said eight bodies had been recovered so far, including that of an infant.

Accidents on overcrowded and poorly maintained boats are common in the region. At least 30 people drowned in July after a boat from Guinea capsized off Sierra Leone in bad weather.
