Musings from the last little bird: Self Publishing in New Zealand - To ...

Why Am I Self Publishing?

I've wanted to be an author all my life. If you've been following this blog at all (which I haven't been stellar at keeping alive, I do admit) you will have seen me transition from flitting about, from career to career, and gradually grow more serious about writing.
It's very difficult to make a living through creative writing alone. Perhaps almost impossible. I'm extremely lucky that I have a very supportive family and no major obligations (like children or a mortgage) to stand in my, no doubt poverty-stricken, way.
So I have to make a confession right up front.

The Money

I am self publishing, in part, because I hope it will mean another source of income that I can take advantage of in the next year or so. If you put your work at the right price point on Amazon, you are entitled to 70% royalties. Even if you don't, the average seems to be about 35%. That can add up. Particularly when you compare it to the percentage trade publishers generally offer (off the top of my head, I think it's between 8% and 12%. E-publishers often offer royalties on a par with self publishing, so don't rule them out on royalties alone).
However, money is a terrible reason to self publish.
Most people who self publish will not see much money from their work at all. After they've tapped out the market made up of friends and family, their work will languish in the depths of Amazon forever. Promotion is not a magic wand. Quality is not a guarantee.
Of course, the same is true of someone who publishes with a trade publisher, but in that case you most likely at least got an advance and professional promotions, as well as your book sitting in actual bookstores.

So why do I think I will be different? I don't. I'm gambling here, to some extent, and I'll tell you why.

Speed and Quantity Counts

I am a very fast writer when I want to be. My output isn't huge at the moment, although it's not bad, but it's as low as it is because I'm lazy. And it's rising.
I've had years to develop the bad habits I've got and I'm slowly trying to get rid of them now. I'm learning to make myself excited to write and dedicated to learning the craft.
But, if I light a fire under my own tail, I can get things done. I mucked around for months, thinking I should put something out there before really deciding to go with it. I've had an idea for years that would fit a series of novellas beautifully, about a young man who is really good at problem solving and is travelling around some strange islands doing just that.
About a month ago, I finally decided to really get to it and I finished the second half of the first novella in the series within a single weekend. When I finally crank myself up, I'll hopefully be able to do around one novella per month.
No, they are not works of literary genius. They are, hopefully, fun to read.
And from what I've seen, being able to crank out a lot of books? in a short time works to your advantage when self publishing. I can't imagine many publishers being happy to publish one book per month for you (except whoever published the Goosebumps series perhaps!), but having a huge backlist available when self publishing online is what helps people to make a living. With such a low price point, and no problems with delivery or storage, if someone likes one of your books there's no reason not to buy all the rest right then and there.
(I think I should point out here that of course, there is always the option to self publish paper books as well as the e-books I'm going to harp on about, but they are not something I've given much thought to yet as they are a much bigger investment in time and money when it comes to self publishing).

Size Matters

You'll notice I said novella and not novel. Perhaps I could have crammed my series of novellas into a single full sized novel, but I like the way it breathes at the moment. However, if I wanted to get it published by a publishing house, even an e-publishing house, I'm fresh out of luck. There are very few places that will take works of this size and subject matter (i.e. non-romance, approx 37,000 words) and most of the ones that might take it are fairly new and untested. They still might be a good option, if I wasn't happy to do all this work myself and I do think longingly of them at times.
At any rate, if I self publish, I don't have to worry about size. People have been self publishing even short stories to some success. My novella looks positively gargantuan in comparison.

Promotion

I am fairly well versed in the internet and in social media. I know how SEO works and what spamming is and so forth.
I'm not sure if promotion is a reason to self publish (it seems like it's going to be a pain in the arse, frankly) but it's not a reason to not self publish, at any rate.

Some other reasons for self publishing that I've seen people mention are:
Wanting to have control over your cover and the rest of the process.
Wanting to have control over the rights to your book.
Wanting to undercut the big publishers.
Wanting to see results quickly.
Being unable to get your book placed with an agent or publisher.
Writing a niche topic that probably isn't commercially viable for a publisher.
Knowing you've already got a ready-made audience and wanting to cash in on that, rather than share the profits.

There are probably more that I haven't seen or thought of. If you have another reason, by all means leave it in the comments!

I've got other novels in mind, or even half started, that I will eventually send out to agents and publishers. I have the book of poems that I completed last year (which still needs work) which I intend to send out as well. I am not putting all my eggs in one basket, so to speak.
But I'm excited about this experiment. I loved writing this fun little book. And I'm hoping other people will like it too.

Next post I'm going to talk about the bits of self publishing that I could do without.

Apple secures multitouchrelated patent dating back to 1995 from inventor

Apple has come into possession of a number of patents owned by Canadian inventor Timothy R. Pryor in recent years (see the More Coverage link below for a few examples), and it's just today been granted another that's particularly interesting. Described rather broadly as a "method for providing human input to a computer," the patent (filed in July of 2009) is a continuation of one dating all the way back to 1995, and appears to cover some fairly basic multitouch-related functions. As detailed in the patent's claims, that includes controlling a virtual object on a screen with two simultaneous touch inputs, as well as virtual controllers displayed on the screen that can also respond to touch input. The patent also describes responses to touch input, including both visual and force feedback cues, and it offers a whole range of possible applications beyond the independent claims, including an aircraft cockpit or vehicle display. Those independent claims are clearly focused on general computer interfaces, though, not specific implementations. Naturally, all of this has simply been revealed by the USPTO -- we wouldn't expect to hear anything from Apple or Mr. Pryor on the terms of the deal.

HTC One X Jelly Bean - Business Insider

Steve Kovach, Business Insider

HTC says it plans to upgrade its popular One Series of smartphones to Google's latest version of Android, called Jelly Bean.

In a statement to Engadget, HTC said:

We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean.

However, based on the HTC's upgrade patterns in the past, it could be a long time before Jelly Bean arrives the One Series phones. Most of HTC's phones are still running a version of Android called Gingerbread, which is about a year and a half old.

Google released Jelly Bean this month on its flagship Galaxy Nexus phone and new Nexus 7 tablet. Now it's up to manufacturers like HTC, Samsung, and Motorola to bring the update to their devices.?

We think HTC's One X is one of the best smartphones available today, so Google's new Jelly Bean features would be very welcome.

Discovery of new heart failure trigger could change the way cardiovascular drugs are made

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? In their quest to treat cardiovascular disease, researchers and pharmaceutical companies have long been interested in developing new medicines that activate a heart protein called APJ. But researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) and the Stanford University School of Medicine have now uncovered a second, previously unknown, function for APJ -- it senses mechanical changes when the heart is in danger and sets the body on a course toward heart failure. This means that activating APJ could actually be harmful in some cases -- potentially eye-opening information for some heart drug makers.

The study appears July 18 in Nature.

"Just finding a molecule that activates APJ is not enough. What's important to heart failure is not if this receptor is 'on' or 'off,' but the way it's activated," said Pilar Ruiz-Lozano, Ph.D., who led the study. Ruiz-Lozano, formerly assistant professor at Sanford-Burnham, is now associate professor of pediatrics in the Stanford University School of Medicine and adjunct faculty member at Sanford-Burnham.

Stretching the heart

APJ is a receptor that sits on the cell surface in many organs, where it senses the external environment. When a hormone called apelin comes along and binds APJ, it sets off a molecular chain reaction that influences a number of cellular functions. Many previous studies have shown that apelin-APJ activity directs beneficial processes such as embryonic heart development, maintenance of normal blood pressure, and new blood vessel formation.

According to Ruiz-Lozano's latest study, however, APJ can also be activated a second, more harmful, way that doesn't involve apelin. In this pathway, APJ senses and responds to mechanical changes in the heart.

To better understand these mechanical changes, let's look at a person with high blood pressure. In this case, the person's heart has to work harder to pump the same amount of blood at the same rate as a healthy person. To meet the increased demand, individual heart muscle cells start making more proteins, making the cells bigger. Eventually, cell membranes stretch and each cell begins to pull away from its neighbor. This leads to an enlarged heart -- a condition known as hypertrophy. In pathological (disease) conditions, hypertrophy can lead to heart failure.

APJ and heart failure

The best way to determine the role a protein plays in a particular cellular process is to see what happens when it's missing. To do this, Ruiz-Lozano's team, including co-first authors Maria Cecilia Scimia, Ph.D. and Cecilia Hurtado, Ph.D., used mice that lack APJ. Under everyday conditions, the APJ-deficient mice appeared perfectly normal. However, unlike their normal counterparts, the mice lacking APJ couldn't sense danger when their hearts enlarged. As a result, mice were actually healthier without APJ -- none succumbed to heart failure.

"In other words, without APJ, ignorance is bliss -- the heart doesn't sense the danger and so it doesn't activate the hypertrophic pathways that lead to heart failure," Ruiz-Lozano said. "This tells us that, depending on how it's done, activating APJ might make matters worse for heart disease patients."

Internet Marketing Basics for a Strong Foundation | Sky Marketing, ltd.

Internet Marketing is an incredibly common business model. However, you still find many aspiring Internet marketers struggling to make their first dollar. While finding success with your own Internet Marketing business isn?t exactly rocket science, why do so many people find it such a huge challenge? This is primarily because they don?t focus on the basics. It?s true; understanding the basics of IM won?t just help you take the right kinds of action, it will help you go in the right direction too. It will help you lay out a really firm foundation from the beginning. This article will teach you a few of the basics of Internet Marketing that you should not ignore.

You need to understand that an option that didn?t look so great a while ago, could be the best thing ever today. That idea that you had a couple of years ago that you couldn?t get to turn a profit could be a really great money maker now. The point is that you shouldn?t ever blow off or ignore even stupid sounding ideas when you are an Internet Marketer. Put some time into trying to reviving them. Your progress depends on how well you?re able to incorporate this philosophy into your online business. It might take you a little while before you are able to truly grasp the essence of this specific tip but eventually you will see that getting a return on your old ideas is really great feeling.

Don?t ignore email list building when you?re starting out. A lot of new Internet marketers have this perception that list building can wait. Ask yourself, though, why would you keep the most important part of your online business for later on? Don?t you think it is best to start building your strongest asset right away? Holding off on building your email list is a major mistake. You are leaving money on the table if you do not build a list. It?s important to understand that your real financial success comes from profits earned through the back end, not the front end. These same tools are used by people in MLM Marketing

Create connections within your industry and work on getting to know other Internet Marketers. Build contacts so that you can leverage them later on when the time comes. You do not have to go full throttle when you want to use these contacts. Take it slow and steady and you will find success. You want to build the strongest relationship possible with your potential partners. It?s important to extend a helping hand to these contacts whenever you can. Try to win their trust so that you can benefit from the contacts you make later on. The more effort you put into keeping your network as strong as possible the better your results are going to be.

Even the most laser targeted traffic isn?t going to matter if you can?t get it to convert for you. So work on your site?s content, the copy and the offer to improve your conversion rate as time goes by. If, as an Internet Marketer, you put in real effort to learning as much as possible about the basics, you should see a really great return on your efforts. If you want to stay ahead of your competition and make an impact on your target audience then you need to do it right. The kind of efforts that you put into your Internet Marketing business will determine the long term aspects of your business. Your main goal, then, needs to be improving on your basics and really working on them. Only working toward short term goals isn?t enough. So go ahead and take some real action on the things that you?ve learned in this article and you?ll see great results for yourself.

I Was an A-List Writer of B-List Productions

I had wanted to be a screenwriter since 1962, when I walked out of the Tower Theater in Corpus Christi, Texas as a very different 14-year-old boy than when I had walked in. The movie was Lawrence of Arabia, and watching it was liked being sucked into a wormhole and delivered to an alternate universe. The unworldly disorientation I experienced was due in large part to David Lean?s direction, to his unprecedented sense of scale and pace and purpose, and to the Maurice Jarre score, which half a century later was still so haunting to me that I sometimes use it as the ringtone on my cellphone. But Lawrence of Arabia had another dimension, one that I had never really noticed before. For the first time, I was aware that movies were written, not just somehow fortuitously assembled. It was obvious that the dialogue??The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts? or ?What attracts you personally to the desert?? ?It?s clean.??had to have been set down somewhere in cold print, not just thought up on the fly. And it was more than the dialogue itself that made me take notice of the name Robert Bolt; it was the wordless action as well, the way the scenes steadily built and drew upon each other to produce such a satisfying impression of momentum and coherence.

Nevada Interior dept. work supported 19,000 jobs

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Department of the Interior officials say their agency's parks and other projects supported more than 19,000 Nevada jobs last fiscal year.

The federal agency says Monday that the 16 million visitors to national parks, wildlife refuges and other federal lands supported about 10,500 jobs, while energy and mineral development supported close to 6,000 jobs.

The department says Lake Mead National Recreation Area alone supported almost 2,500 jobs. That area sees about 7 million visitors a year.

Interior department officials say their agency's projects and sites made a nearly $2.4 billion impact on the Nevada economy.

Nationwide, they say the economic impact is $385 billion.

The Interior department's responsibilities include managing public lands and natural resources and working with Native American tribes.

Rihanna Harper's Bazaar Cover: Snake-Like!

Rihanna covers the new issue of Harper's Bazaar and the star looks absolutely snake-like. Seriously. We are talking full-on reptilian up in here.

That or America's Next Top Model-esque. You be the judge.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the cover is not the getup itself, but the fact that unlike the vast majority of Rihanna pics, she's clothed.

Seriously, when have you known her not to show skin?

Rihanna Harper's Bazaar Cover

Typically, our girl prefers scraps of cloth if she covers up at all, but here, she's gone full-scale(y) coverage. And animal print. Bizarre even for Bazaar.

For anyone out there interested, and we can't imagine who that might be, Rih is wearing a dress and boots by Tom Ford and a Repossi ear cuff.

You never know, even if it doesn't go mainstream, maybe this unique look of hers could inspire some unintentionally hilarious Chris Brown lyrics.

What do you think of Rihanna's Harper's Bazaar look?

Family Fun: Bicycle Safety : Ideas for Women Home and Family Blog

This summer many of you will be out with your children riding bicycles. They are a great way to spend an afternoon and a lot of fun for children. While you are out there please take some time to teach your children proper bicycle safety.

  1. Check the laws in your state as each one is different. Many require the use of helmets when riding.
  2. Teach your children the proper hand signals. If you do not know them you can find them online or by visiting your local DMV and picking up a driver?s license study manual (most have them listed in these.)
  3. Make sure your child (and you) are riding a bicycle that is fit for them. here should be 1 to 2 inches between you and the top bar if using a road bike and 3 to 4 inches if a mountain bicycle.
  4. Make sure they are wearing clothing that makes them seen by drivers if they are riding on the road. However NEVER allow them to ride on the road without you or another adult present.
  5. Never ride at night.
  6. Teach your children that a bicycle is much more than just a toy. They need to understand how it easily they can be injured.

Birmingham transfer embargo lifted by Football League

By Sportsmail Reporter

|

Birmingham have had their transfer embargo lifted by the Football League.

The Blues have been unable to sign players since being placed under embargo in March for not filing their 2010/11 accounts in time.

Birmingham owner Carson Yeung was arrested in June on money laundering charges and is due to face trial in Hong Kong in November.

Acting club chairman Peter Pannu said in a statement: 'We are pleased that the hard work of those at the club and the Football League has paid off and that the financial prudence put in place since Carson Yeung's arrest has been recognised.

'Despite the lifting of the embargo, we still need to ensure that this financial prudence remains in place going forward.'

Meanwhile, Blues captain Stephen Carr has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

The Republic of Ireland international defender was out of contract at St Andrew's but has been retained as captain by new manager Lee Clark, who was appointed as Chris Hughton's successor last week.

'I'm delighted that Stephen Carr has agreed a new contract with the club as he's a very important player,' Clark told the club's official website.

'I've worked with Stephen both as a player and a coach and I know that he's not just a fantastic, international-class player but he's also a leader. Stephen is a major influence both on the field and in the dressing room and he'll continue as my captain this season.'

Carr added: 'It's good to get it sorted. I'm buzzing now and I can't wait to get back and get restarted with the lads. Hopefully we'll have a successful year. I always wanted to re-sign once everything was right for me and I'm happy to be extending my stay here.'

Preclinical imaging of progesterone receptor signals usefulness of biomarker in determining effectiveness of therapy

Reston, Va. (July 2, 2012) Research published in the July issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine shows imaging progesterone receptor (PR) status also may be able to identify responders and nonresponders to endocrine therapy at an early stage. Estrogen receptor-? (ER?) status is an important factor in determining the most appropriate treatment for breast cancer patients, especially for those who are ER?+ and likely to respond well to hormone-based, or endocrine, therapies.

Prominent professor and research chemist Michael J. Welch, PhD, who passed away in May, was a contributing author for this research. "Throughout his career, Dr. Welch specialized in the synthesis of new radiolabeled compounds for medical imaging, with a special emphasis on the growing numbers of applications in PET," said Dominique Delbeke, MD, PhD, editor of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine. Noted for his ability to see beyond the immediate aspects of basic work to potential future applications, Welch was both a prime mover and an integral part in the development of PET as it transitioned from a compelling investigative idea to widespread clinical acceptance. "Many of his discoveries and research will live on well into the future," said Delbeke.

The study, "Small-Animal PET of Steroid Hormone Receptors Predicts Tumor Response to Endocrine Therapy Using a Preclinical Model of Breast Cancer" was an example of his unique approach to research.

"Positron emission tomography, or PET, has typically been used to identify the target for endocrine therapy in breast cancer by demonstrating that ER is present in tumors using F-18-fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET, or by monitoring for hormone-induced changes in tumor metabolism'metabolic flare' with F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET once therapy has begun. What is novel about our study is that we chose to image progesterone receptor levels to see how the estrogen signaling pathway is functioning in response to endocrine therapy," said Amy Fowler, MD, PhD, lead author of the study.

In the study, mice with mammary cell lines (SSM1, SSM2 and SSM3) derived from STAT1-deficient mammary tumorswhich are ER?+/PR+ and similar to the majority of human breast cancerswere imaged. Small-animal PET/computed tomography (CT) was performed using F-18-FES to image estrogen receptor status, F-18-fluoro furanyl norprogesterone (F-18-FFNP) for progesterone receptor status, and FDG for glucose uptake.

Initial imaging of the cell lines showed that SSM3 tumors displayed the greatest F-18-FES and F-18-FFNP uptake, and therefore, the SSM3 cell line was used to test the response to estradiol, an ER agonist, and fulvestrant, a pure ER antagonist. Upon treatment with estradiol, it was determined that PR expression is estrogen-inducible and indicative of ER? signaling in the SSM3 tumors. Mice treated with fulvestrant showed early decreases in F-18-FFNP uptake after initiation of therapy, prior to measurable growth inhibition. SSM2 tumors, which were not growth-inhibited by fulvestrant despite also being ER?+/PR+, showed no change in F-18-FFNP uptake after initiation of therapy. These data support the potential use of PR imaging with F-18-FFNP PET of patients with ER?+ breast cancer at baseline and shortly after initiation of endocrine therapy to distinguish between responders and nonresponders, and thus help facilitate the selection of therapies most appropriate for individual patients.

"An important goal of molecular imaging in cancer research is to noninvasively predict early responses to therapies in order to guide further management," noted Fowler. "Our work using a preclinical model of breast cancer helps support the notion that molecular imaging can achieve this goal by testing whether the target utilized for a specific therapy is not only present but also functional."

An estimated one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 280,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed among women in 2011, and nearly 40,000 died from the disease.
