2) Big Ideas Courses

Big Ideas Courses

In spring 2013 we are launching the Big Ideas Courses in a big way. We have five all-new courses on offer, each taught by at least two faculty members from completely different disciplines. This multi-disciplinary approach is what makes the Big Ideas courses special. These new courses have yet to be reviewed for breadth, but they are so exciting that they may fill up fast, so I wanted to make sure you know about them now, before students start enrolling.

The courses are listed on the attached poster, and details are at?http://bigideascourses.berkeley.edu. I sent each of you a hard copy of this poster in time for fall 2012 TeleBEARS, because we also had one fall course. If your copy is no longer posted and you want another, please let me know and I will mail you one.

Thanks for helping to promote this new liberal-arts program!

Please join us on October 23 for ?Behind the Robe.? Berkeley Law?s Dean Christopher Edley, Jr. will sit down with 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Chief Judge Alex Kozinski and the former Chief Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court Dorit Beinisch for a conversation about the role of courts in 21st century democracies. The speakers will address topics including elections, national security, technology, religion, gay rights, immigration, globalization, and more.

Judges will compare and contrast how different courts address these issues, highlight unique aspects of judging in California and Israel, describe the challenges of the adjudication process, and touch upon their personal paths to a career in the judicial branch of government.

Time at the end will be reserved for a question and answer session with the judges. Please RSVP to ensure a seat.

October 23, 2012
Catered reception begins at 5:00 pm,
Main program begins at 5:45 pm.

Booth Auditorium
Berkeley Law
2778 Bancroft Way
Berkeley, CA 94720

Distinguished guests:

Chief Judge Alex Kozinski currently serves as Chief Judge on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. An engaging and entertaining speaker, Chief Judge Kozinski has presided over challenges to the death penalty, and served on a panel of judges which ruled a federal crackdown on California?s medical-marijuana laws unconstitutional.

Dorit Beinisch served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Israel from September 2006 until February 2012, where she presided over some of Israel?s most hotly-contested legal battles. Her judgements protected unempowered groups from human rights abuses, instituted disciplinary measures against offenders convicted for sexual harassment, and overturned a law exempting ultra-Orthodox seminary students from army service.

Did Arianna Huffington Buy A Townhouse on East 80th Street ...

We?ve heard that media doyenne Arianna Huffington has been looking for a good perch in the city ever since HuffPo got snapped up by AOL, and now the New York Daily News?is claiming that Ms. Huffington is headed to the Upper East Side, where she is may or may not have bought a townhouse on East 80th Street.

As far as real estate rumors go, ?We think it?s a townhouse on E. 80th St.? is fairly weak. But there are signs that Ms. Huffington might be in the market. Donald Trump said that he jacked up the rent on an apartment at 502 Park Avenue specifically to keep Ms. Huffington, his sworn enemy, out when she was considering renting there last year. And last we heard she was renting a townhouse in the West Village.

In the event that Ms. Huffington has not bought already, but is seriously considering it, we?ve prepared a portfolio of available townhouses for her perusal. Our favorite is the Woolworth Mansion, but there are a lot of other strong contenders out there, including one that has suspiciously disappeared from the market.

My roleplay is a broken link

roleplay/we-aren%e2%80%99t-human/

It's a broken link. Refuses to work. I'm gonna post a new one and see if that works, because the ones before and after it are fine.

I replaced it with this: roleplay/we-arent-human/, so if you could just delete the first attempt, that'd be great. Thank you! :)

I can't think of anything witty or insightful to say, so I'm going to say some (obscure or not) lyrics from a song and hope you don't realize.

Agent Jonny Geller?compares a scene?in the movie Lawrence of Arabia to the current state of publishing and?implores publishers, retailers, agents, authors, even readers to?abandon fixed positions and?brush up on?guerilla tactics.

It?s not too late for traditional publishing to save itself, says Colin Robinson of OR Books, who?offers ten life-extending suggestions. His ideas include the following: sell direct to readers, curate carefully, focus on editing and design, print on demand, and publish fast.?

?Think publishers are making a killing on e-books? Think again, says agent Richard Curtis, who is also the founder of E-Reads, an e-book publishing company.

In his latest Writing on the Ether, Porter Anderson chronicles information coming out of the Frankfurt Book Fair and ?looks at Amazon Author Ranking, the problem of discoverability, and more.??

What makes a book sell? Great writing plus an original and compelling concept will take a book three-quarters of the way toward yes, says children?s book agent Jill Corcoran, who offers six tips useful to writers of any genre.

Developmental editor Alan Rinzler profiles seven writers who?ve chosen to self-publish for seven different reasons.

Speaking of seven, at Writer Unboxed, Robin LaFevers describes the seven stages of publishing grief.

Agent Jenny Bent?s answers to a graduate student?s questions?are of interest to writers, too.

Kristine Kathryn Rusch is back with a follow-up to her post about why writers disappear from bookstands.
